Home description
La Vieille Grange offers a peaceful option for holidaying in France. Even at the height of the season the tiny hamlet of Pailleroux retains its tranquillity as the sun beats down on the surrounding sunflower fields. This attractive cottage retains many of the features of the original dwelling and barn - warm limestone walls, timbered beams and cool spacious rooms. Its conversion has added the facilities required for families to enjoy a relaxing and comfortable holiday. With five bedrooms (2 en suite), family bathroom, a separate shower-room, spacious farmhouse kitchen with modern facilities and a spectacular lounge complete with gallery, up to eleven people can be accommodated. The grounds lead towards the surrounding fields, with a swimming pool (8m x 4m) to cool off in, swim or just lounge beside with a glass of the local 'Pineau des Charente'. Patios front and back together with garden furniture, and barbecue complete the facilities.
There are shops and a small market (Tuesdays and Fridays) in nearby Villefagnan. Cycling can be enjoyed from the house (cycles are NOT provided at the house), horse riding (Villefagnan) and canoeing (Rejallant near Ruffec) are available locally with Futuroscope, Cognac, Poitiers and Angouleme within easy reach. This is a peaceful rural setting, so if you want activity and nightlife this is not for you. It is ideal if you want to enjoy the tranquillity and company of friends or family.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region
The Charente is a region of variety and contrast, from the rolling hills to the East, to the sunflower fields and cognac vineyards to the South and West. There are Chateaux like La Rochefoucauld which hosts a son et lumiere during the summer, many romanesque churches like Aulnay and roman remains for example at Saintes. There are towns like Poitiers and Cognac where shopping and chic french living can be enjoyed. The Charente is a region famed for its Cognac and it is possible to visit local producers, both large (like Hennesy and Martell) and small local producers. The region boasts a variety of festivals throughout the year, including the Bande Dessine (or comic and cartoon) festival in Angouleme. There is a large theme park, Futuroscope at Poitiers, which is popular with both children and adults. The region remains truly French and unspoilt, although many people speak English.
Villefagnan area
Closer to home, there is canoeing at Rejallant, where it is possible to hire canoes and kayaks by the hour, but also to embark on half and full day 'descents' of the Charente. There is horse riding at Villefagnan and fishing is available locally, day and week permits can be purchased in Ruffec. The quiet roads and tracks that surround the house are ideal for exploring the area by bike. There is a pretty chateau at Bayers and local connections with the knights templar at Raix and la Magdeleine. The village protegee of Tusson is worth a visit with its historical connections to the Valois dynasty, a restored medieval herb garden and local craftspeople. There are a variety of restaurants and cafes in the area to suit all tastes and purses, some of which specialise in using local Charentais produce. Local markets at Ruffec and Villefagnan are worth a visit.
