The Normandy / Manche region

Normandy generally has a similar climate to Cornwall, although being a little further south it does appear to be warmer for longer in the summer. Apart from the weather and the beautiful countryside the area does have many more attractions.
For historians, or for those old enough to still have a personal interest, there are the area's ties to the second world war. In addition to some splendidly informative war museums you will often come across spots that flag up the local history, such as a simple granite stone marking the site of a field hospital. These are also often marked by pristine flags - French, American or British flying over the site.
Going further back in history there is the famous Bayeaux Tapestry alluding back to 1066 and the Battle of Hastings. An amazing work of art as well as an historical record. A visit to William the Conquerer's castle would help complete the historical picture.
The famous Mont - St - Michel is another must. Allow a whole day for just this visit alone, although it will hardly be enough.
Granville is a wonderful fortified coastal town that is well worth a visit. Try going fairly early in the day to allow yourself an afternoon on one of the many wonderful beaches that you pass on the way. Perhaps a visit to the nearby golf course would be in order.
Mortain, which is s 35 minute drive by car, has pleasant walks by two waterfalls, and also supports pony trekking, go-karting and the Abbey Blanche.
For the whole family there is a wonderful zoo at Champrepus near Villedieue les Poeles.
And what of Avranches itself? This is the spot inland from the coast where the battle for control of Normandy finished, and the push toward Germany began. It is the highest point in the area and controlled the land round and about during the battles. Totally flattened during the war it is now a smart, modern town that has plenty of wartime memorabilia to offer, as well as shops, restuarants, museums, botanical gardens and leisure parks.
The Villedieu les Poeles / Brecey area
Friday is market day in Brecey where you can buy local produce such as fish, vegetables, Normandy cheeses and a wide variety of locally made pancakes for which the area is famous. The market is quite small and caters primarily to the local farming community. The town itself has a variety of shops, a very good supermarket, baker, post office, garage and petrol station. There is an open air swimming pool and a paddling pool (with lifeguards), a horse show jumping arena, tennis courts and a park with a lake.
Villideaue les Poeles is twice the size of Brecey and has a much bigger street market on Saturdays. The selection of shellfish is incredible. It is famous for its brass and copperwork, and has working exhibits. It also boasts a few very good restuarants.
Walking is a real pleasure locally. There are hundreds of minor roads and very little traffic.
Other than a good pizza restaurant - it does serve other dishes and wonderful salads - there are no restaurants that stand out in Brecey. Avranches and Villedieu are a different kettle of fish and there are details of some very good places to eat in the folder at the cottage
