The Normandy / Manche region
Nomandy is made up of five departments - Seine Maritime, Eure, Calvados, Orne and Manche (where we are situated). La Manche is bordered by Calvados to the east - between Canrentan and Isigny and to the north and west by the English Channel, which gives it its name.
La Manche includes Utah Beach (US D-Day landing beach), St Mere Eglise (the first town to be liberated by US forces) and Cherbourg, its main town and port. The department is famous for its thoroughbred racing and trotting horses and there is a national haras (stud) at St Lo, which can be visited during the summer months.
La Manche shares a similar climate to the south coast of England, a few degrees warmer in the summer months with temperatures reaching 30 degrees.
The west coast boasts some of the best beaches in Normandy and the region is famous for its cider, calvados, cheese, and seafood, particularly oysters and mussels.
Villedieu les Poeles area
The area surrounding our property comprises many towns of interest, including Villedieu les Poeles, famous for its copper industry and picturesque market and Vire, famous for Boudin de Vire (black pudding sausage).
Our nearest town Gavray also holds an annual Marche Normand (Normandy Market) in mid July, which draws local people and tourists to a traditional market and fete with fireworks in the evening, dancing and live band - an enjoyable event not to be missed!
The seaside town of Granville is ideal for browsing boutiques, walking around the marina and its haute-ville (upper town) which includes a modern art gallery and clif top walks. The Christian Dior house and gardens are also a must see, with annual summer exhibitions of past couture collections.
Granville also offers daily boat trips to the Iles Chausey (Islands of Chausey), situated just off the coast and provide idyllic walks and a glance at unspoiled island life. Ferries to Jersey and St Malo also operate.
The larger towns of Avranches and Coutances, provide a greater range of shops, hypermarkets and restaurants as well as their impressive cathedrals and parks.
