The Swiss Alps / Vaud/Lake Geneva/Swiss Alps region
The Villars Barboleuse ski area is situated at 1300m and is one of the highest mountain villages in the French-speaking canton of Vaud, is south-facing and overlooks the Rhone valley and offer glimpses of Lac Leman, Geneva's famous lake.
The views are indeed spectacular and there are numerous places to visit nearby. For Culture Montreux( Jazz festival) is only 40mins. Go a bit further to Lausanne and you can take a ferry to Evian in France. If you are fed up with the skiing in Villars, then here's the options.
Verbier 40 mins, Chamonix 1h 15mins, Porte du soleil( Avoriaz, les Gets, Morzine, 45 mins), Gstaad 1h. Further afield but not too far Crans Montana, Saas fee and Zermatt.
Villars, Switzerland / Barboleuse area
Villars/Barboleuse has plenty to offer other than skiing and walking. Three indoor and plenty of outdoor tennis courts. Indoor and outdoor swimming pool, cinema and bowling alley. Ice skating rink, watch ice hockey matches every Sat in the season. Indoor and outdoor thermal baths in Lavey les bains 25 mins away. 18 hole golf course summer only situated up amidst the ski runs.
In January we have the famous Villars 24 hr ski race when the town is full of celebrities. For skiing we have miles and miles of cross country skiing plus piste skiing up to 3000m on the Diablerets glacier which is all covered by the same ski pass. Kids under 9 ski free in Villars. How to get there
Air connections to Geneva are excellent, especially from the UK. Book early and often come for the price of a train fare in the UK. Easyjet, Thompson, Jet2 and of course BA and Swissair all have regular flights. Some budget airlines drop routes after winter but Easyet flies all year.
Geneva airport offers an excellent range of car hire options (check to see whether your airline offers special car hire rates in addition to the specialist companies) and Geneva airport railway station has direct connections through Geneva City to Bex (Villars'/Barboleusess nearest mainline stop) throughout the day. At Bex an awaiting cog rail train takes you to within 100m of the door of the apartment. Villars/Barboleuse is 1hr 15mins from Geneva by road, and 1hr 55mins by train.
