The Swiss Alps / Vaud/Lake Geneva/Swiss Alps region
The area of Villars-Gryon is one of amazing contrasts, offering summer temperatures in the high 30s to sunny winter days with ideal skiing conditions on wide, scenic slopes. It is impossible to be bored, with every imaginable sporting activity from water parks, swimming, tennis, horse-riding, golf, mountain biking, hiking, white water rafting, parascending, cross-country skiing, gliding, hot air ballooning and husky dog sledding to name just a few.
The Chalet is also well situated for visits to chateaux, abbeys and world-renowned museums. There are also plenty of opportunities to relax, either by visiting one of the many spas or thermal baths, sunning yourselves whilst taking in the stunning scenery, dining at one of the mountain top or lakeside 'refuges' or simply enjoying a game, film or sauna at Chalet Moonrise.
Villars, Switzerland / Barboleuse area
Villars is perched on a sunny, South-facing wooded plateau above the Rhone Valley and the chalet enjoys panoramic views over the Swiss Alps, the Dents du Midi and the Mont Blanc massif. It benefits from easy access from Geneva, either via a fast motorway route along the edge of Lake Geneva, or a scenic train journey, both approx 90 minutes.
Villars is a traditional, unspoilt traditional Swiss village, complete with chocolaterie, creperies and tea houses. It offers all-year round activities that find the fine balance between recreation and relaxation. There are no concrete high-rise blocks to be found in Villars, only small hamlets of chalets arranged on the hillsides, friendly affordable restaurants and bars and a warm, mountain style welcome.
Ever since the Orient Express arrived here in the early 20th century, visitors to Villars have enjoyed the healthy mountain air and stunning vistas be found on the natural balcony it rests on. At approx 5000ft in the heart of the Vaud Alps, this idyllic setting combines comfort, tranquillity, relaxed surroundings and amazing scenery.
Winter sports fans can enjoy the wide range of attractions the area offers, including 220 km of marked ski runs (including the glacier at Les Diablerets at 3000m (10,000ft). Villars offers a variety of interesting and varied skiing, catering for skiers of all abilities. The ski area extends to over 200km of local pistes and access to a further 300km of pistes, including Gstaad and Chateau d’Oex with a ‘Glacier – Alpes Vaudoises’ pass. In addition, snow-boarders enjoy 2 large boarding parks and very good off-piste skiing can be found around the glacier.
How to get there
If driving to Chalet Moonrise the journey is an extremely straight forward 90 min drive from Geneva Airport and we would supply detailed directions upon booking. It is also 3 hours from Zurich Airport.
If travelling by train, there is a very reliable and civilised (typically Swiss) rail service direct from Geneva Airport to Aigle (a 20 minute journey by car/taxi to the Chalet). Alternatively, you can change at Lausanne and or Bex and either take the moutain train up to Barboleusaz (sometimes spelt 'La Barboleuse') or take a taxi for the 10 minute journey. We can supply details for an excellent airport transfer company or local taxi cab services.
We would recommend the use of a car whilst staying at the chalet.

Further details outdoors: SKI DETAILS The chalet is located extremely close by to the (blue) ski piste leading to the Barboleuse telecabine with access to the entire Villars and Les Diablerets ski region. Ideal for skiing back at the end of the day.
The two linked areas of Villars Gryon & Barboleuse have 220km of marked ski runs, including the Les Diablerets Glacier, with altitude ranging from 1200m – 3000m
The pistes are split: 30% beginner, 60% intermediate 10% advanced, with wide, well-groomed, varied pistes with some of the most spectacular scenery you will ever see. Enthusiasts wanting to be challenged can try the glacier at Les Diablerets which also has some excellent off-piste skiing.
Snowboarders can enjoy the magnificent snowpark on the Chaux-Ronde trail. In all there are four glaciers in the area available for heliskiing for the more adventurous. For those staying for longer durations and wishing to try new resorts.

GOLFING DETAILS Villars is blessed with a world-class 18-hole golf course located in an amazing and spectacular mountain location at 5300 ft (1600 m). The golf course and its superb restaurant are perched on a south-facing plateau where you can play a round, enjoy drinks or a meal amid some of the most stunning views of the Alps and Mont-Blanc.
For those wishing to learn how to play, individual lessons or week-long group programmes for all levels can be arranged with PGA certified professionals in this most relaxed, unique and beautiful setting.
The Club is open from mid-May to October and can be accessed by the funicular railway from Villars station or by road.

The Chalet is self-catering.
A car is recommended as the chalet is situated just up on the mountain-side/piste (hence the spectacular views).
Not suitable for wheelchairs or the infirm as the chalet is across three floors.
