The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region

The Costa Blanca - South-eastern Spain - Without doubt a huge majority of visitors who travel to the Costa Blanca each year do so mainly to take advantage of the sun, the sea and the beaches, It would be a mistake however to think that this is all the Costa Blanca has to offer, a quick glance at a travel guide of the area will confirm that there are a great many places of interest to visit and enjoy.

Exactly where the Costa Blanca (White Coast) begins and ends is not clearly defined but the region comprises approximately 200 km of coastline stretching from Gandia in the north to Pilar de la Horadada in the south, it also takes in a large hinterland with areas of mountains, sierras, river valleys and natural parks. The area to the north of Gandia is called the Costa del Azahar (Orange Blossom Coast) and the area to the south of Pilar is known as the Costa Calida (Warm Coast).

The entire Costa Blanca region has a rich and distinguished history and many artefacts have been found dating back to the Neolithic Era. Lying as it does in an important strategic position on the Mediterranean coastline, the Costa Blanca has been invaded and occupied by various important civilizations including Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths, Carthaginians and Moors. Each civilization has left its own identity on the region and each has resulted in significant cultural and religious consequences for the indigenous population. Perhaps the greatest influences on the region were caused during the Roman and Arab occupations, which both moulded the areas subsequent history.

A different kind of invasion occurred during the 20th Century - that of tourism, and this has probably resulted in the most rapid and dramatic changes in the Costa Blanca’s history so far. A huge amount of development has taken place and the economy of the region has undergone sweeping changes. Towns and villages which formerly relied on fishing, agriculture and salt production now rely almost entirely on tourism and related industries and many new jobs have been created, increasing the wealth of the region and its inhabitants.

The main attraction for holidaymakers (especially north Europeans) is of course the wonderful climate, with over 300 days of sunshine each year and very low rainfall, it is the perfect location for a relaxing summer holiday or a well earned winter break. Sunshine is virtually guaranteed from May to October so it is not necessary to confine visits to the popular months of July and August. In the months of December and January the Costa Blanca normally enjoys some beautiful sunny days, so it is a great place to take a break away from the dismal weather of the UK and other north European countries.

The Costa Blanca has some of the best beaches in Spain and they are usually very well cared for and safe, there are a large number of ‘blue flag’ beaches and these are normally cleaned every day and will often have life-guards on duty during the busy summer months. Some of the more popular beaches can get busy during July and August but if you take some time to explore a little, you may find quiet and isolated beaches even during the high season.

Overall the Costa Blanca has much to offer holidaymakers and tourists of all types, fine beaches for sun lovers, ancient towns and cities for culture lovers and wonderful natural parks for nature lovers. Try a visit some time soon and enjoy a little of what the Costa Blanca has to offer.

Villamartin area

The Costa Blanca is now one of the most cosmopolitan areas in Europe with a coastline untouched by blatant tourism. Inland, hillsides covered with terraced vineyards and lush-green citrus orchards - testament to the agricultural traditions of the area - are dotted with pretty towns full of narrow streets leading down to flower-filled squares.

At the centre of the White Coast is cosmopolitan Alicante, with its magnificent palm-fringed waterfront promenade, the Esplanada de Espana, and first-class shops and restaurants. Lying between Alicante and Murcia, on the banks of the River Segura, is the historic town of Orihuela ("townhall"), famous for its market gardens and splendid baroque cathedral. Within 20 kms of Orihuela is a stretch of coastline studded with small bays.

There are three excellent golf courses that are close to each other in the Orihuela Costa area although Villa Martin is by far the most established and best known of the three (the other two are Las Ramblas and Campoamor). Villa Martin is a fine championship course and is noted for hosting the 1994 Mediterranean Open.

The renowned Villa Martin Plaza has a great selection of bars, shops and restaurants and is the ideal spot for that "special night out". The gardens are very picturesque, look closely and you will notice the naked lady golfer statue.

Villamartin is fast becoming one of the most prestigious golf courses in Spain, with all the amenities you would expect from a development of this standard.

Added to which the climate is wonderful, the beaches are uncrowded and there are a number of lively towns within close proximity. No wonder Villamartin is attracting so much interest!

Close to Villamartin are numerous beaches with magnificent views over the sparkling blue Mediterranean and the “white sand” that is typical of the Costa Blanca. The beaches along the coastline close to Villamartin are Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, Cabo Roig, and Campoamor. All of these beaches and all the other major beaches along this part of the Mediterranean coastline are regularly awarded the European Blue Flag which is your guarantee of high standards and facilities for the whole family.

Torrevieja is about 10 minute's drive from Villamartin. Torrevieja used to be a tiny fishing village (like many of the towns on the Costa Blanca) but it has witnessed a huge explosion in size and population in recent times - most of which is from the huge numbers of people moving to Torrevieja from Northern Europe or buying holiday homes in the area.

Torrevieja is surrounded by salt lakes and as a result the climate is meant to be very healthy especially for people with arthritus. The salt lakes are protected and form the habitat for numerous protected species of bird such as the greater Flamingo and Montagu’s harrier. The salt is also commercially extracted providing one of the Torrevieja's main industries.

Any visitor to Torrevieja is bound to visit the harbor area with it's numerous restaurants, tapas bars and shops. The fish restaurants are a must as the fish is fresh in from the local fishing boats.

Torrevieja has many attractive parks, gardens and squares where you can sit down and just relax under the shade.

Torrevieja's indoor market offers fish, meat and fresh vegetables.

For sightseeing in Torrevieja you can enjoy the harbor, the fish market, the Church of La Inmaculata Conception, tour the S-61 Delfin submarine and the museum of sea and salt.

Torrevieja also has two water parks and a large indoor sports centre with an Olympic sized swimming pool.

Fly into Alicante or Murcia. Our apartment is just 45 minute from Alicante airport and 25 minutes from Murcia airport.

Many budget airlines fly to these destinations including Ryanair, Easyjet, Flybe and Jet2. A good search site is skyscanner.com

To rent a car I would suggest carjet or economycar, both are good sites.
