The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
The Costa Blanca - South-eastern Spain - Without doubt a huge majority of visitors who travel to the Costa Blanca each year do so mainly to take advantage of the sun, the sea and the beaches, It would be a mistake however to think that this is all the Costa Blanca has to offer, a quick glance at a travel guide of the area will confirm that there are a great many places of interest to visit and enjoy.
Exactly where the Costa Blanca (White Coast) begins and ends is not clearly defined but the region comprises approximately 200 km of coastline stretching from Gandia in the north to Pilar de la Horadada in the south, it also takes in a large hinterland with areas of mountains, sierras, river valleys and natural parks. The area to the north of Gandia is called the Costa del Azahar (Orange Blossom Coast) and the area to the south of Pilar is known as the Costa Calida (Warm Coast).
The entire Costa Blanca region has a rich and distinguished history and many artefacts have been found dating back to the Neolithic Era. Lying as it does in an important strategic position on the Mediterranean coastline, the Costa Blanca has been invaded and occupied by various important civilizations including Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths, Carthaginians and Moors. Each civilization has left its own identity on the region and each has resulted in significant cultural and religious consequences for the indigenous population. Perhaps the greatest influences on the region were caused during the Roman and Arab occupations, which both moulded the areas subsequent history.
A different kind of invasion occurred during the 20th Century - that of tourism, and this has probably resulted in the most rapid and dramatic changes in the Costa Blanca’s history so far. A huge amount of development has taken place and the economy of the region has undergone sweeping changes. Towns and villages which formerly relied on fishing, agriculture and salt production now rely almost entirely on tourism and related industries and many new jobs have been created, increasing the wealth of the region and its inhabitants.
The main attraction for holidaymakers (especially north Europeans) is of course the wonderful climate, with over 300 days of sunshine each year and very low rainfall, it is the perfect location for a relaxing summer holiday or a well earned winter break. Sunshine is virtually guaranteed from May to October so it is not necessary to confine visits to the popular months of July and August. In the months of December and January the Costa Blanca normally enjoys some beautiful sunny days, so it is a great place to take a break away from the dismal weather of the UK and other north European countries.
The Costa Blanca has some of the best beaches in Spain and they are usually very well cared for and safe, there are a large number of ‘blue flag’ beaches and these are normally cleaned every day and will often have life-guards on duty during the busy summer months. Some of the more popular beaches can get busy during July and August but if you take some time to explore a little, you may find quiet and isolated beaches even during the high season.
Overall the Costa Blanca has much to offer holidaymakers and tourists of all types, fine beaches for sun lovers, ancient towns and cities for culture lovers and wonderful natural parks for nature lovers. Try a visit some time soon and enjoy a little of what the Costa Blanca has to offer.
Villamartin / Las Ramblas Golf Course area
Las Ramblas is a prestigious golf course on the Costa Blanca. Only 5 kms away are the nearest beaches of Cabo Roig and Mill Palmeras.
Torrevieja is 10 minutes away, and the Mar Menor is only 15 minutes away with all the sailing activities that take place there. Through Summer there is always a local fiesta going on somewhere near. There is something special about the Torrevieja seafront in the evenings, especially at weekends. As the sun goes down, the outdoor cafes and market comes alive. There are several stalls selling leather, jewellery, clothes, spices, hand-craft and much more! Also catch one of the interesting activities going on, often with musicians too! Only a 15-20 minute drive. Venture further into the back-streets for some great shopping. Here you will find many small boutiques.
Torrevieja is surrounded by two large and beautiful natural salt water lakes which form the "Salinas de Torrevieja" and are an official Spanish nature reserve. These lakes attract a wide variety of bird life. The city of Torrevieja which gets its name from an old tower (old=vieja ; tower=torre), was first mentioned around 1800. It became famous in 1802, when it took over the salt administration from Orihuela. Apart from the salt industry, tourism and fishing keep the city alive. The harbour gives home to 300 fishing ships and over 900 private sports boats. A wonderful view, especially when the sun sets.
The weather in Torrevieja makes it an ideal location for year round holiday activities - especially if you want to fulfil that yearning to get away during those dark, dreary winter months to the sunnier parts of Europe. On average, Torrevieja enjoys 320 days of sunshine per year and an average daily temperature of 18°C. Temperatures in July and August are typically 30°C. Many people prefer the months April, May, June, September, October and November.
For those who wish to explore further a field. Why not take a day trip to Benidorm and capture the amazing Terra Mitica Theme Park, Aqua Landia Water Park and right next door Mundomar Marine Exotic Animal Park. There are so many things to do and see, why not try a spot of golf! Las Ramblas boasts the most challenging course in the area, closely followed by Villa Martin (5-10mins drive) and the acclaimed Campoamor Course next door. However, you do not have to be a player to enjoy the course! Have a relaxing evening stroll along the course, and explore the ravine amongst the pine trees! All this is accessible from our villa!
Just a few minutes stroll away is the clubhouse, where you can enjoy a glass of wine in pleasant surroundings. Just 2 km from our villa is a fine selection of bars and restaurants where there is something to cater for all tastes and pockets.
For those special occasions, why not treat yourself to a meal at the Campoamor Golf Club Restaurant. Smart/Casual dress is required and book well in advance. If you fancy something more relaxed venture up to Villa Martin Plaza, where you will have a choice of some very good reasonable priced restaurants and bars. Great for families and a good night out! If the evening is still early, after dinner have a browse around some of the shops!
If this all sounds too hectic, simply relax at the villa!
How to get there
Fly into Alicante or Murcia. Our holiday home is just 40 minute from Alicante airport or 20 minutes from Murcia airport. Many budget airlines fly to these destinations including Ryanair, Easyjet, Flybe and Jet2. A good search site is skyscanner.com
We can arrange airport transfers for you but if you would like a car to rent I would suggest carjet or economycar, both are good sites.
