The Algarve region
The eastern part of the Algarve, or “SOTAVENTO” as the Portuguese call it, is without doubt the new frontier of the Algarve. On the borders with Spain and home to some of the Algarve’s most unspoiled beaches, the eastern Algarve has traditionally been a very well kept secret.
The apartment is located just in front of Europe’s most important and idyllic nature reserve, The Ria Formosa Nature Park. Comprising a system of sandy barrier islands enclosing tranquil blue lagoons with flamingos and other birds, it is certainly worth a visit.
Half a century ago, people from Olhao lived only from the sea. Those who were not sailors, were the sons or grandsons of sailors. The wives were employed by the fishing transformation companies, whilst the men were either fishing off the coast from small boats or from big boats (traineiras), on the high seas. There was plenty of fish and the life was extraordinary. It is still an amazing and unique place. Life here follows a different pattern from elsewhere. People like to gather around the fish/vegetable market and local cafes watching the movement of boats in the river mouth. Some have called Olhao the cubist town, in reference to the white square houses, each topped with a terrace for drying fish, octopus or figs. In the summer, the kitchen moves out into the street where the sardines and small makerals ("carapaus"), fresh from the fishing nets, cook on charcoal grills.
It is foodie heaven and in August there is a wonderful seafood festival where instead of meat and carbo-hydrates, there are great big bowls of fish and seafood (crabs, shrimps, shellfish), served with salads. Meanwhile, the restaurants are open all year around and you can take your choice of a different wonderful place to eat each night.
Olhao train station is only a few minutes walk away and you can either take the train east and visit the interesting perched town of Tavira, go west, and visit the picturesque towns of Lagos and Portimao or even go further North (310 km away) and visit the historic city of Lisbon.
My preferred beach is "Praia do Barril", 15 Km East of Olhao, towards Pedras Del Rei. When you reach Pedras Del Rei, take a small train towards the beach. For this you need to rent a car.

"Beautiful apartment but too expensive to use hotel facilities at such a high which is not advertised"

I saw your comment about the cost of the swimming pool in the nearby hotel. Why do you want to use a swimming pool in the nearby hotel if you have one just above the apartment, at the roof top ? And it is free. I do not provide any information in the advertisement that states that the hotel pool is free.
This is for your information.

"Chilled out stay in Olhao"
We actually rented 2 apartments in this complex but this particular apartment was the superior one because it was more like home from home with lots of extra little touches like the beach umbrella and the shopping trolley which is really needed. The apartment is ultra modern and very secure with high quality locks - rooftop pool really nice. Olhao is a working town with a loads of good quality local restaurants and bars full of local people. There are virtually no tourists here but luckily most of the waiters etc speak good English. Every type of cuisine is catered for but we concentrated on the seafood which was fantastic and very reasonable in price. it is also worth exploring the backstreets where the bars and restaurants are ridiculously cheap 60 cents for a glass of white wine.
Finally the Islands of Armona and Farol - amazing uncrowded beaches that stretch for miles and miles and great fun catching the local ferries.
