A bright, sunny apartment in an ancient hill village on a hill between Villafranca and Bagnone. Recently restored with a panoramic terrace, french doors to the living room, a large kitchen/dining room, a beautiful new bathroom, and two bedrooms upstairs.

There are magnificent views from the house and the terrace to the Apennines.

Steps lead up from the narrow cobbled street where all village life takes place. The single street leads to the castle at the head of the town. It is possible to drive to the door for unloading, and parking is available in the piazza.

The property is probably 13th century but has been recently restored throughout. The village has a small 'shop' that sells bread and milk in the morning, and there are a range of shops, bars and restaurants in Villafranca only 3 km away which also has a large swimming pool complex and a train station with trains to Florence, La Spezia, and Parma. The beautiful old market town of Bagnone, 'the jewel of Lunigiana' is only 5 minutes drive away.

There are many lovely drives and walks into the hills where river pools for bathing may be found.

On an historical note, the village was a traditional resting place on the Via Francigena - the pilgrimage route from Canterbury to Rome, and the Archbishop of Canterbury stayed there in the 11th century.

At Il Tinello you are in the heart of a lively Italian village, but can also sit peacefully on your terrace with a glass of wine looking out across the valley to the hills beyond.

Further details

The stairs to the bedrooms are the traditional stone ones, fairly steep with high risers.

For this reason, we feel the property is not really suitable for toddlers or children under 6.

Babies are fine.

The Tuscany region

Here in Lunigiana you will experience a very relaxed tempo of a century or two ago - calm and unhurried. The restaurants serve traditional dishes made from local ingredients at at a bargain price. Many don't have menus. You have to listen carefully to what they are serving that day - or just say what what you would like, and they will endeavour to provide it. The food in this area is as good as you you will find anywhere in Italy.

Many of the ‘Borgos’, old hill villages, are worth a visit. Try just wandering through the village streets, saying buongiorno or buona sera to the people sitting around on chairs or doorsteps chatting in the sunshine. If you attempt a few words of Italian, they will always be pleased, and many of the youngsters will want to practise their English

The rhythm of the seasons still rules here. Tomatoes are 'passed' through sieves in the summer to make 'passata' for the year. Barrels are left to soak and swell in the street ready for the year's vintage.

In their time the olives and the chestnuts are harvested and processed in the 'cantine' beneath the village houses.

Funghi hunting is an obsession. Tens of kilos are collected by each family each year. The places where they are found are closely guarded secrets, though you have to have a licence to collect them. There is even a 'funghi' machine in one bar instead of a fruit machine!

Villafranca in Lunigiana

Lunigiana is known as 'Land of the Hundred Castles'. Many are still standing others have been ruined by time. In Pontremoli Castle is a Stele museum - prehistoric stone statues that have been found in large numbers in this part of Lunigiana. They stare out at you from the past in a most impressive manner.

Not far away there are deep bathing pools in the crystal clear river - ideal on a hot sunny day. There is also an olympic-sized municipal pool in Villafranca, just 5 minutes' drive away.

Just 40 minutes away is the old fishing port of Lerici, wih beaches and restaurants along the quai side. From here you can catch a boat to the famous Cinque Terre, old villages clinging to the cliffsides.

Lunigiana also boasts of being the Land of the Hundred Lakes, with wonderful scenic drives into the Appenines, making it splendid walking country..

At Equi Terme is a spa with natural hot water gushing out of the rocks. Treatments are available at the Spa centre. There are also trips into the spectacular caves, inhabited in mesolithic times.

The ski resort of Cerreto with a lovely lake and splendid scenery all around Also Zeri, a collection of ski villages.

"Get away from the crowds and relax in Beautiful Tuscany"

Had a wonderful holiday in Villafranca away from all the tourists. The apartment is in an authentic Italian village, where the views were wonderful and the locals very friendly. We went with 2 teenagers who were happy to immerse themselves in all things Italian and did not miss not having computers and TV. We spent quality time together enjoying all the sights. The apartment is very comfortable and well stocked with piles of information on places to go, there is something for all tastes. A huge outdoor swimming pool just 10 minutes drive away was a great bonus in the heat (and not busy). You can easily go and visit all the popular sights and then get back to the relaxing peace of Il Tinello .
