The Costa de la Luz region

Huelva is the fourth largest port in Spain and is associated with Christopher Columbus, Huelva being where he set off on his voyage of discovery of the Americas. Three sites which are intimately connected to his voyages known as the Lugares Colombinos can be visited and have replicas of the ships he sailed. The centre of Huelva is also worth a visit with its many shops, bars and restaurants.
Seville known as the capital of Andalucia is one of Europe’s most beautiful cities with its Moorish influences. It is the centre of bullfighting and flamenco music; it is also credited with the invention of tapas and has more than a thousand tapas bars where the choice of food is virtually unlimited.
Cadiz is thought to be the oldest city in Europe and is home to many beautiful and historic monuments and attractions. The old part of Cadiz often referred as the ‘Old City’ looks Moorish in appearance and has narrow cobbled streets which lead into small plazas. Cadiz is also home to some of Spain’s most beautiful beaches.
Jerez is famous for its sweet wines, fine horses, brilliant singers and dancers of flamenco. It has excellent cafes, restaurants and shopping, especially in its pedestrianised main street Calle Larga. Also worth a visit is the old gypsy or gitano quarter, with its narrow lanes and old churches.
Other places worth a visit include: Granada, La Alhambra, Cordoba and many more.
The Villablanca area
Donana National Park
It is well known for the variety of species of birds including five threatened species. Some are permanent residents, winter visitors from north and central Europe or summer visitors from Africa, such as numerous types of geese and colourful colonies of flamingo. There is in fact no end to the life cycle of this wilderness where 125 species of birds are known to breed, as well as 28 mammal species, 17 reptiles, nine amphibians and eight species of fish.
Golf
There are 21 golf courses on the Costa de la Luz; the closest to Villablanca being Isla Canela a 12-minute drive and Istantilla Campo de Golf is just a 15-minute drive away. A short drive into Portugal gives you further golf courses to play. Golf courses at Cas Marim - 15 minute, Albeferia, Vilamoura, Almancil, Tavira and San Antonio are within forty minutes to a one-hour drive.
Tennis
A six minute drive from our house towards Ayamonte are tennis courts that can be booked by the hour.
Waterparks/Themeparks
The closest waterpark from our house in Villablanca is at Cartaya and takes around 15-20 minutes to reach by car. Other water parks at Seville and the Algarve in Portugal are also accessible by car.
Beaches
There are miles and miles of unspoiled beaches within a short driving distance.
Isla Canela, Isla Cristina, Islantilla and El Rompido all have wonderful beaches or you can take a short drive into Portugal and sample the many beaches of the western Algarve. There is also a beautiful man made beach in the historic Portuguese town of Alcoutim just a 2-minute ferry ride across the river from another picturesque Spanish town ‘Sanlucar del Guadiana’ situated on the banks of the River Guadiana, which is about a 15-minute drive from Villablanca.
