About the home

The rooms are spacious, and the property enjoys an open and airy feel. The practical, rustic country kitchen has an indoor barbecue fireplace, exposed stone walls and terracotta floors. The bedrooms are large and comfortable, and one has access to a covered open-sided terrace area, once a hayloft.

The house is surrounded by pasture land and the new swimming pool, set in a grassy plateau, enjoys a breathtaking vista.

The little village of Villa Collemandina close by has a tiny supermarket, a butcher's shop and a restaurant. The sandy beaches of the Tuscan coast, the enchanting fishing villages of the Cinque Terre, gracious Lucca and Pisa, are all within reach.

The Tuscany / Lucca Province region

The Tuscan Region of Italy is well known for its warm balmy summers, beautiful countryside, rolling hills, mouth - watering food, and of course its towns and villages, rich with mediaeval architecture…

The Garfagnana region of Tuscany, often known as its ‘Green Lung’ is situated away from the milling crowds that can often be found at the most famous Tuscan locations and is totally unspoilt, remaining untouched by tourism.
The scenery is spectacular, green and mountainous with views of both the Apuane and Appenine mountains at every turn…And, due to the altitude whilst the weather can be very hot, it is always pleasantly cool for sleeping…
The food is usually home made, using home grown produce, and is typically simple and extremely tasty. Prices here remain very reasonable due to the fact that food is prepared with the locals, and not tourists in mind…The local wine is cheap and surprisingly drinkable!
The pace of life is slow and peaceful – spend your days enjoying secluded picnics, swimming in rivers, or watching locals play bocce or ‘cheese throwing’. Visit hundreds of ancient hill top villages, or relax at home basking in stunning scenery.
For ‘townie’ days, visit the mediaeval towns of Barga, Lucca, Castelnuovo, with Pisa and Florence within easy reach too…

The Villa Collemandina area

The little village of Villa Collemandina close by has a baker, butcher, chemist, café, post office, and doctor's surgery as well as a restaurant. There is picnic area near the “Lago di Villa” lake in Villa Collemandina, which provides trout for fishing and beautiful walks along its shores.

Just 5 minutes drive away is Pontecosi village with its pretty lake, churches, traditional houses also has a café/village shop right on the shores of the lake, which not only stocks basic groceries but which sells ice cream and a small but tasty selection of reasonably priced hot and cold snacks.

The lake is a haven for wild birds and is also a good fishing venue. There is a traditional Italian bowling (bocce) alley and a small children’s play park.

The medieval market town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (8km away) lies in the heart of the Garfagnana, as this stretch of the fertile valley of the Serchio, flanked by the Apuan Alps to the west and Apennines to the east, is known. The district provides a range of sporting activities and promotes folk, agricultural and cultural events.

Castelnuovo train station is on the main Pisa/Lucca to Aulla line and there is a bus station with good links to the surrounding area.

The ski slopes of Il Casone are about 15 minutes away. The coast (Forte dei Marmi), the enchanting fishing villages of the Cinque Terre, and excellent ski resort of Abetone are about 1 hour away by car (in opposite directions!) Gracious Lucca and Pisa airport are about 1 hour and 1.5 hours away respectively.
