The Galicia region
At the centre of Rias Baixas on the Atlantic coast, is the town of Vilanova de Arousa. Its magnificent location allows you to enjoy all the advantages conferred by the confluence of maritime, ocean, mountain, and river environments.
Arousa Island At the mouth of the Arousa Ria, connected to land by the modern two-kilometer O Vao bridge, is Galicia’s only island municipality, A Illa de Arousa. Of its 7 square kilometers, only 2 have been urbanized, thus preserving a valuable natural heritage of mountains, wetlands, and lagoons, with a road network that allows you easy access to any corner of the island.
Nature and Landscape The region encompasses sites of great ecological and aesthetic value, like the area around the lighthouse, where rocks sculpted by the sea and wind evoke easily recognizable shapes. Or Carreirón Natural Park, under the protection of the international Ramsar agreement, ZEPA, and the EU, where you can see the Brava inlet, with a tidal waterwheel of great ethnographic value, and several marine and shorebird observatories. You will also find many other places of historical interest, including the pre-Roman cemetery Os Bufos and the Roman village near Puntas Nasas, palpable examples of the interest this island inspired even in the distant past. From the Con do Forno lookout (also called Con do Santo because of the image of the Sacred Heart found there) you can enjoy beautiful views of the town, the San Xulián inlet, and the Arousa sea. This sea has always sustained the island’s inhabitants, impregnating the town with that pure marine flavor you can appreciate at the Puerto do Cantiño and the fish market area.

Leisure and Sports The quiet beaches of Vao, Camaxo, Camaxiñas, Cabadeiro, Area Secada, and Pombas allow for both a little rest and relaxation and nautical sports. Water skiing, SCUBA diving, kayaking, sailing, surfing, windsurfing, and more – anything is possible here. But perhaps the island’s top aquatic sport is racing dornas, handmade boats with a long tradition in the ria. Another aspect of tradition in A Illa de Arousa is celebrating its fiestas: the area’s most famous festivals are the San Xián festivals in January, El Carmen and the mussel festival in July, and the August music festival. Cuisine Vilanova has a fishing port with a long tradition, where you can still see time-honoured methods of coastal fishing and shellfish harvesting to wrest from the sea the meat of the town’s most characteristic dishes: sardines, anchovies, spearfish, cuttlefish, cockles, clams, oysters, mussels, spider crabs, and edible crabs. You can taste these in any of the many restaurants and tapas bars around town.
Festivals and Traditions Vilanova de Arousa is a region that loves tradition and culture, and this spirit is clearly on display during the celebration of its festivals. The “witching” night of Saint John is a deeply rooted tradition along all the beaches of the Galician shore, but nowhere is the experience comparable to the numerous bonfires of Baión. The region also has various festivals in August: two food festivals, dedicated to cockles and mussels; and the culture week dedicated to its most renowned author, a week of many different activities under the title “Valle-Inclán in the Streets of Vilanova”.
