The Algarve region

Vilamoura is located in the centre of the Algarve region, with the beautiful hills of the Algarve serra to the north, and the waters of the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Vilamoura is a place of international standing and one of the most sophisticated resorts in Europe. Vilamoura offers an exceptional climate, world class golf and beautiful beaches and marina, and is just a 20 minute drive from Faro Airport.

Vilamoura Marina with its approximately 825 berths, is one of the main centres of attraction in the Algarve. It is the largest and most important marina in Portugal and it is an important landmark on the national and international recreational boating scene. From here you can head for the sea in a motor-boat or yacht on for different cruises and fishing trips. There are numerous water-sports on offer in Vilamoura: windsurfing, parasailing, sailing, water-skiing, and diving – the choice is yours. Around the Marina, there is a range of shops and boutiques with top brands, bars, restaurants and outdoor sitting areas making it a lively area all year round– here, after a bit of shopping, you can choose between fresh fish, an infinite variety of shellfish, or an exotic meal from a far-flung part of the world. Later on, towards the end of the evening, you can go for a stroll, sit on one of the terraces, visit a bar or a casino with a night-club that rivals the most sophisticated in Europe or party on the beach with world famous DJs.

Vilamoura has golf courses to suit players of all tastes and levels. With a total of 117 holes, Vilamoura has made a major contribution to the Algarve being considered by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) as the “Best Golf Destination”. Vila Sol was designed by the British architect Donald Steel. It opened in 1991 and acted as the venue for the Open of Portugal for two years in 1992 and 1993. Donald Steel is an architect who likes to retain the existing natural setting and vegetation, reducing movement of the earth to a minimum and using the undulating terrain to create the type of course that fits the British philosophy of the game. Vila Sol also has an excellent driving range, putting green and academy. 'The Old Course' (also within easy reach of Vila Sol), designed by the architect Frank Pennink, was opened in 1969 and is, without doubt, one of the best-known Portuguese courses internationally, especially as a result of the exceptional way it blends into the local landscape and the appropriate use of the site's topography. The remodelling and modernisation of the course, which was undertaken by the English company Hawtree & Sons, gave the Old Course back the magnificent playing conditions which had made it famous worldwide. On 'The Old Course' all the holes have their own distinct character, which makes it easier to memorise the details and recall them later.

Vilamoura has two magnificent beaches. Praia de Vilamoura is to the east of the Marina mole, with its golden sands. Praia da Falésia, to the west of the Marina, is a beach with fine white sand which stretches for over 3 km between the warm, calm waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the dunes and high cliffs with their warm colours; in the background, the tops of the green stone pines and the golf courses. The car parks make it easy to reach the beach on foot and this can be done over a magnificent bridge over the Ribeira de Quarteira and raised walkways which cross the dunes. Both beaches are equipped with everything you could possibly need for total comfort: thatched umbrellas, sun loungers, pedalos, facilities for visitors with limited mobility, beach buggies for wheelchair users, first aid post and showers. There are magnificent restaurants and snack bars overlooking the beach where you can enjoy a light meal, a lunch of fresh fish, a cocktail at sunset or a moonlit dinner. The climate is suitable all year round for a visit to the beach, both for bathing during the hot summer months and for walks during the remaining mild months of the year.

By choosing the Algarve you can benefit from a superb climate all year round. The Algarve is in Southern Portugal and so has a warm southern Mediterranean climate with long summers.

The Algarve has over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year and benefits from the warm winds from North Africa. Being a coastal region, the area has a mild climate all year round, in summer the sea breezes help to prevent temperatures from reaching unpleasant levels.

Beyond Vilamoura there is the whole of the Algarve coastline to explore. Along the 150km of coast, there is great beach diversity. You can find extensive golden sanded leeward beaches, small bays and lagoons that source from the cliffs sculpted by the Windward Ocean, from the calm transparent waters of the southern Algarve to the slightly further afield surf beaches of the west coast.

If the preserved Roman site and Museum of Cerro da Vila in the centre of Vilamoura does not satisfy your appetite for historical culture there are many nearby places of interest within easy access. Take time to explore the local towns of Silves , Estoi and Tavira, with historical centres where you may observe monuments with architectural styles influenced by the Moors and Romans, left by these invaders throughout history. Culture is also present in the several art galleries which you can visit in Faro or Loulé. In Loulé, Lagoa and Algarve's interior, handicrafts, specifically art with pottery have a prominent place.

All over Algarve, gastronomy makes the visitor's delight. Famous fish and shellfish dishes, the sweet delicacies with carob, fig and almond or the liqueurs made with this area's typical products are a must try!

The wild dunes and mountains are appealing to walks and horseback riding. For family outings, there is a vast choice of water parks in Algarve, the most famous being Aquashow (near Vila Sol apartment) and Zoomarine. For those who like more radical activities they can have fun in a safari or at Almancil's kart track.

"Fabulous Apartment in Family Friendly Resort"

We had a wonderful holiday at this apartment which has everything you could want - a real home from home. The patio area is enormous and gets the sun all day, you could sleep on the sunbeds they are so luxurious. The resort is very family friendly and the pool area and communal grounds are extremely well maintained. A great location and we had a fantastic holiday there, hope to return soon as Rodrigue couldn't have been more helpful. Thanks again.

"Fantastic apartment in a great location"

We have just returned from the Vila Sol apartment. This is a fabulous apartment with everything you could wish for to ensure a great holiday. The accomodation was very comfortable and very well appointed. The outside terrace could not be better, the beds were luxurious and just invited a realaxing time. I cannot fault the accomodation and the facilities offered. The communal pool and grounds are superb. This is one of the best apartments we have stayed in and intend returning and thank you to Rodrique, the owner for a great stay

"Pure Relaxation, Perfect Apartment"

This apartment was perfect for everything we needed. I traveled with my partner and another couple, we had the most relaxing week away, we need nothing for a whole week but sit by the pool by day and BBQ'ed by night. If you want relaxation this is the place to go. I would definitely recommend hiring a car as the apartment isn't to close to any local shops or restaurants. There is an English Pub Oscars and an amazing Italian restaurant Moons about a 25 min walk on the complex, we ventured out to Oscars 1 night and had a gorgeous meal at Moons on the last night (although pricey but worth it). We had to get a taxi to Lidl to do our shop for the week, which wasn't ideal but we only had to do it once. We stocked up well. The marina is about 15 mins away and was about 15 euro's in a cab. Again the marina was pricey so we only had the one night out there and then back to our BBQ's. Over all we had an amazing stay at Villa Sol, the apartment was clean, had everything we needed for our stay, pool was very close and we had amazing weather. Although wish we had hired a car. The owner was brilliant with making contact and ensuring we had everything we needed before we set off. Would definitely recommend this apartment
