The Algarve region
Why choose the Algarve, Portugal?
So what makes the Algarve such a great place? For the hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers from around the world that fly into Faro Airport or drive or sail from other parts of Europe each year, it's the promise of sun-drenched days at the beach, sharing in a lovely relaxed and welcoming family-orientated culture and endless options for dining out and things to do, for all ages. Algarve Holidays have long been thought of as great family holidays and beach holidays and the region has deservedly earned a reputation for golf holidays too. However the Algarve should also be known for it's truly unique contrast between the golden coastline and the beautiful rural countryside, it's many historic attractions and thousands of species of flora and fauna, making it the perfect holiday destination for interests such as photography, painting, nature watching, walking and other outdoor pursuits.
The Algarve, Portugal, is only a 3 hour flight (or less) from the United Kingdom, Ireland and many other parts of Europe and flights arrive to the region's sole international airport, Faro Airport (in central Algarve). Faro flights arrive daily throughout the year, with several arrivals and departures each day from airlines during the busiest summer months of July to September.
The beautiful sandy beaches are, of course, one of the major attractions for the Algarve (and understandably too, because they are some of the best in the world, with Blue Flag awards to prove it!) but as our Algarve tourist information shows, this sunny southern region of Portugal offers so much more as well! The fantastic Algarve Weather that delivers dry sunny days for most of the year, makes enjoying outdoor life a way of life. The Algarve is perfect for walking, sightseeing and cycling and for all the sports you can imagine – surfing, golf, tennis, horse riding, kayaking and even extreme sports such as kitesurfing, rock climbing and wakeboarding. Families can enjoy water parks, theme parks and zoos, boat trips along the breath-taking coastline (with dinghy rides into the caves and 'grottos' and the opportunity to see dolphins too), crazy golf, karting and many other things to do in the Algarve!
Which resort will you choose for your Algarve holiday?
Measuring only 160km x 50km, the Algarve, Portugal, is without a doubt the perfect holiday destination for families, couples, independent travellers and backpackers, mixed groups and retired people...in fact, anyone who wants to enjoy a lovely chilled break! For families, we suggest hitting the coast (that's not difficult we know!) and for the most accessible family entertainment stay between Quarteira and Lagos (central and western Algarve). Albufeira, Praia da Rocha and Lagos are the best for partying for singles, couples and groups, or for a luxury holiday try the 'Golden Triangle' (Almancil - Quinta do Lagos - Vale do Lobo), Vilamoura or Ferragudo (an up and coming hotspot!). For culture and history, try Silves, Tavira, Lagos or Sagres and for quiet walks in beautiful countryside, visit Alte, Monchique, São Brás de Alportel, Alcoutim, Aljezur or the western atlantic coast of the Algarve. For independent travellers and backpackers, travel down to the furthest points in western Algarve because it's the end with the cool culture where everyone's welcome! (Just head to a bar on your first day and you'll fit right in!) For older generations, if you want accessible beaches and be able to walk around with ease try the flatter eastern Algarve resorts, such as Monte Gordo and Vila Real de Santo António. This area of the Algarve is also a little warmer throughout the year and the sea is too because it is closer to the Mediterranean Sea.
Every resort in the Algarve has its own unique character, offering totally different scenery, experiences, activities and gastronomic delights. Since the start of Algarve tourism (only really taking off back in the 1970s) some resorts have changed immensely, like Albufeira and Carvoeiro, and some areas have barely changed at all, such as Alte, Monchique and the Western Atlantic Coast. With central Algarve being the first place to 'be hit' by tourism there has been a mass of development, with hotels, tourism activities, bars, restaurants and shops popping up all over the place. However, areas such as the Western Atlantic Coast still hold on to their natural 'ruggedness' and there are still beaches where you won't find a beach bar or even a toilet!
Visit Portugal's Algarve on any budget!
One of the great things about a holiday in the Algarve is that it can be as cheap or as lavish as your budget will stretch to. There is a variety of Algarve Accommodation from campsites, rooms, guesthouses and hostels, to 5* hotels, luxury resorts and villas to rent. Restaurants, bars and cafes that are popular with Algarvian locals offer amazing value for money and a literal 'taste of Portugal' and at the other end of the scale there are fine dining establishments, including Michelin Star restaurants. In terms of things to do, at the top end there are spas, champagne cruises and yacht charters, but of course, the best things to do in the Algarve are free…the beaches, landscape and culture, and admission-charging historical tourist attractions are always very reasonable. Similarly with Algarve travel the public transport system is an incredibly cheap way of travelling around (and the buses and trains are both very efficient and clean) but if you've got the budget, you can use taxis, hire a car, 4x4, jeep or mini-van or even book a limousine!
The Old Village Vilamoura is one of the most tranquil settings in The Algarve, surrounded by the Pinhal Golf Course yet only a 15 minute walk from the bustling Marina and surrounding beaches. It is ideal for families and couples looking for a relaxing holiday.
The Old Village is within walking distance of all other amenities, including Tennis, Cinema, Church, Medical Centre, Restaurants, Bars, Night Clubs and Discotheques, Casino, Supermarkets, Shops, Banks, Chemist and Post Office and also within walking distance of the magnificent EEC blue flag Falesia beach which stretches for miles. The magnificent architectural style of the Old Village Vilamoura is based on the classic 17th and 18th century town houses of Lisbon and Faro. Built in the classical Portuguese style, the Old Village is actually a purpose-built resort of high quality apartments, townhouses and of course luxury Villas situated in Vilamoura, one of the Algarve's most prestigious holiday destinations only 25 minutes from Faro airport
The Old Village mixes style and elegance with the amenities of a modern holiday resort. Surrounded by "Pinhal" golf course, the Old Village is ideally located, only minutes from all of Vilamoura's facilities. There are ample bars, restaurants and cafes in the Old Village where you can buy anything from breakfast, a snack for lunch and a huge selection of delicious evening meals, from italian pizzas to local specialities.
There are three swimming pools - with bar and food facilities - the main pool being child friendly. All pools have sun loungers for hire.
The Old Village amenities include a supermarket, 3 restaurants, 2 cafes, bars, pool bars and a childrens play area all set in beautifully maintained and landscaped gardens. Excursions, bike hire, car hire and golf etc can all be arranged with an on-site agent - Five Star Services, located in Church Square. The layout of the Old Village is designed with safety in mind, the whole resort being pedestrianised and with 24 hour security and CCTV for additional peace of mind.
For a real taste of Algarve luxury, Vilamoura resort is a must-see place to visit or to holiday! It is the biggest private tourism resort in Europe and is one of the most prestigious in Portugal. Although fairly far removed from the traditional Algarve, the purpose-built leisure resort of Vilamoura offers accommodation to suit all tastes - luxury hotels, privately owned villas and apartments on the golf course complexes, and a wide range of hotels and apartments near the marina.
Vilamoura marina is the main centre of activity with a huge range of restaurants, bars and shops (including many designer shops). Luis Figo's 'Bar Sete' (bar seven) is also on the marina front. During the day, although it can get quite busy, it's really a very peaceful area to stroll around. It gets more lively at night, with everyone coming to eat and try out some of the bars, but is still a very relaxed resort.
Boasting a 1,000-berth marina, Vilamoura attracts the wealthy, yachtsmen, golfers, celebrities and in fact, anyone who just fancies enjoying a rather nice place in the sun!
Vilamoura has something for everyone to enjoy - there are boat trips (for those of us who don't own a boat!), specially designed trails for walking and cycling and restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and budgets.
Vilamoura golf has become world famous, and if you like golf, you will be pleased to know that there are several championship golf courses (all requiring handicap certificates by the way). For anyone who simply likes to go to the beach to relax, Vilamoura has two beautiful beaches, Praia da Marina ('Vilamoura Beach'), to the east of the marina and Praia da Falésia to the west. If you enjoy a walk, Praia da Falésia runs all the way to Olhos d' Àgua or stroll along Praia da Marina into Quarteira. The resort is also home to Vilamoura Casino, which has regular evening entertainment, such as shows and dances, as well as the gaming rooms.
If you fancy a spot of luxury then relax the "Purobeach" way on sofas, canopied beds and loungers on Praia da Marina (in front of Tivoli Marina hotel) during the day or around the lake in the grounds of the hotel at nightime. DJ's are on hand to provide gentle music through the day while you soak up the sun or treat yourself to a massage and the pace quickens at night with regular live music acts joining the DJ's.
Vilamoura is a great place to stay whether you just want to enjoy the beaches, play a few rounds of golf, have a game or two of tennis, try something more adventurous like parasailing or maybe take a 'champagne cruise' to celebrate a special occasion!
If you want to go further afield to get more of a feel for the Algarve there are plenty of places within easy reach. Loulé, famous for it's Saturday gypsy market and brasilian style carnivals, is a lovely interesting town to visit. It has a 13/14th century castle, an excellent daily market in it's new market hall and often has music festivals during the summer. To the west of Loulé is a pretty village, Alte, at the foot of the hills - it is a very typical Algarvean village, with the church in the centre and narrow, cobbled streets with whitewashed houses spilling down the hillside. There are springs (fontes) at one end of the village and a very 'picture postcard' scene where the ducks and geese swim in a pool formed by the spring, before the water tumbles down a small waterfall further along.
Faro, the place so many people 'forget' to visit, is a lovely city. The old part of Faro, within the city walls, has the Cathedral and Bishop's Palace in it's central square (Largo de Sé). Just behind the marina (a very modest affair compared to Vilamoura's!) lies the network of cobbled streets and squares, that make up the shopping centre.
If you just want to travel around the resort, there is a 'tourist train' running about every 30 minutes that costs about 3 euros - sit back and enjoy the view!
Alternativly you can use the running path and trim train thats located just outside of th Old Village along the side and centre of the roadway.

We have just returned from a weeks stay in Casa Toja. Everything about the villa is excellent. It was spotlessly clean, very spacious, nicely furnished. Spent most of the time outside by the pool and made good use of the BBQ. The villa is in a very nice area with a five minute walk to the old village where there are a couple of bars and restaurants. We had a couple of drinks at Happy Hour in the Buccaneer, where the owner was really friendly and couldn't do enough for us, even booked our taxi to go to the Marina. It took us 25 minutes to stroll to the Marina and in the evening there was never any problem getting a taxi, which cost 6 Euros. We had a lovely relaxing holiday and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this villa.
