The Algarve region
The Algarve: Due to the importance of its position on the world map this province was at one time its own Kingdom, It has been invaded and fought over by the Phoenicians, Romans and Moors. Closely associated with the sea throughout its history this was the base of the famous Henry the Navigator, who from the point at Sagres organised the 15th century exploration of the New World. The Algarve is composed of 5,411 square kilometres with approximately 350,000 permanent inhabitants. This figure can swell to over a million people at the height of the summer. Its administrative centre is Faro, which is also the location of the main tourist airport situated conveniently close to the centre of the Algarve coastline. There are about 100 sandy beaches washed by the Atlantic Ocean and due to the maritime shelf and warm currents the sea temperature can be surprisingly warm even in some winter months.
Vilamoura area
Vilamoura: Although the Vilamoura area has been inhabited for thousands of years - as revealed by Bronze Age graves discovered in the Casao vineyard - the Romans were the first to settle at Cerro da Vila, as from the 1st century A.D. Late-Roman, Visigoth and Moorish colonies were also established here and each period has left unmistakable traces of distinct civilisations at the site. The remains of a noble mansion, or Villa, a public spa, some fish salting tanks or cetaria, foundations of a burial tower and a port area are a testimony as to how important the Roman presence was in this region. The discovery of Cerro da Vila and consequent development of its Archaeological Site has provided a valuable contribution towards understanding how these civilisations lived in Portugal, and especially the Algarve. The ruins and sizeable collection of unearthed relics exhibited in the Museum are of truly unestimable archaeological value. This makes Vilamoura's Cerro da Vila an important reference point of historical interest that visitors to the Algarve should not miss. Out and About: There are about 100 attractive sandy beaches along the Algarve coastline washed by the Atlantic Ocean and due to the maritime shelf and warm currents the sea temperature can be surprisingly warm even in some winter months. Vilamoura is a special place, a unique leisure and recreation resort community where the pace of life is so easy it feels like summer all year round. Designed from the start to be self-sufficient, Vilamoura is ideally located, features a wide choice of prime accommodation, offers the commercial structure for day-to-day needs and is bursting with sporting and leisure facilities for the whole family. It is a place for rest and relaxation but also for pursuing active pastimes and sports; a friendly and safe residential haven, but also a vibrant and exciting night-life centre. Whether it is a luxury hotel, a private villa or a serviced apartment for the visitor, or also a home to the resident and seasonal population, it is Portuguese, but also truly cosmopolitan. The benevolent climate, with seemingly endless days of clear blue skies, enhances every pastime, be it a stroll on the Marina quay, an afternoon on the beach, a round of golf or a tour of the surrounding countryside. The Algarve summer, moderated by cool Atlantic breezes, is dry and warm. The superb spring and autumn seasons have an air quality that makes colours dazzle with brilliance. The temperate winters offer the shirt-sleeve weather so beloved by visitors from northern climes. Away from the hectic pace and the stress of the modem world, all who visit are revitalised by the lifestyle, the convenience and the hospitality of this truly special place. The Quay: The marina basin is enclosed by a broad quayside which is in turn surrounded by a thriving waterside community. The restaurants and cafes spilling out onto the quay attract visitors from far and away. As the tables begin to fill and conversation levels rise, a magical ambience is created. An ambience savoured by all and to which many return time and time again. Little wonder that the Marina is seen as the focal point of Vilamoura. In addition to newsagents, supermarkets, banks and other stores for staple requirements and provisions, the quayside has a variety of boutiques, international brand outlets, and handicraft shops for souvenir, gifts or personal shopping
