Vilamoura has earned a reputation as Portugal's flagship leisure destination over a period of several decades, due mainly to its six superb golf courses and its sports and leisure facilities including tennis, shooting, horse-riding and lawn bowls , along with superb spa facilities in a number of the leading hotels. Vilamoura's beautifully developed marina takes centre stage, with an impressive collection of eating places, bars, waterside cafés and chic stores. It's a great place to stroll and browse, or to people-watch over a towering ice-cream! Within the Marina is Vilamoura Casino with gaming rooms, fabulous evening shows and a nightclub. Either side of the marina are glorious sandy beaches, Marina beach to the east and the magnificent Falésia beach to the west.

The Algarve region
Portugal's southernmost region known as the Algarve has established itself as a firm favourite holiday destination for people from all over Europe as well as the rest of the world. This is due mainly to its almost tropical climate boasting over 3000 hours of annual sunshine. With its stunning long sandy beaches, majestic cliff facings, secret coves and caves contrasting with the inland of mountains, almond blossom covered hills and quaint hidden towns the Algarve has something to offer for everyone.
There are many major attractions for all the family to enjoy including Zoo Marine (where you can swim with the dolphins), horse riding on the beach and some brilliant fun filled water parks all within a half hour drive of the house. Locally there is golfing, tennis, horse riding and a sports facility.
The water parks are within easy reach - Aqualand and Slide & Splash being the most popular. The parks all provide buses that will pick up you up and return locally. If you want to get away from the coast for the day then a drive to Monchique and Foia (the highest point of the Algarve) is highly recommended. On the way you could visit the castle in Silves and stop for lunch of chicken Piri-Piri in the small mountain town of Monchique. It will take you less then an hour to get there.
Two large shopping centres are 'Algarve Shopping' in Guia and 'The Forum' in Faro just 20-30 minutes by car. The Algarve Shopping, is a large mall which is approx. 15 minutes drive away. Here you will find a variety of shops, a big supermarket, a bowling alley, a multi-screen cinema (most films are in English with Portuguese sub titles) and a food hall.
Alternative ways of exploring the Algarve are by joining one of the many jeeps that head out each day (high season) to explore the unspoilt Algarve. This is a great day out for the family and will pick up and drop off in the area.
There are plenty of great boat trips leaving from both Albufeira and Vilamoura marinas everyday. You can choose from a full or a half day and this can often include a trip into the caves and grottoes of the beautiful Algarvian coast line. If you fancy a drive into Spain then the border is only a 50 minute drive and Seville approx two hours depending on traffic.
Vilamoura is the name given to an area rather than to any actual town, developed into one of the largest single tourist complex in Europe and covers some 2.000 hectares of land (5000 acres!!). The land is variable in its vegetation, some parts covered in pine forests whilst others open recovered marshland. Vilamoura is a special place, a unique leisure & recreation resort community where the pace of life is so easy it feels like summer all year round.
Designed from the start to be self-sufficient, Vilamoura is ideally located, features a wide choice of prime accommodation, offers the commercial structure for day-to-day needs & is bursting with sporting and leisure facilities for the whole family. It is a place for rest & relaxation but also for pursuing active pastimes and sports; a friendly and safe residential haven, but also a vibrant and exciting night-life centre.
Vilamoura is a delight for a gourmet. More than an hundred different options can be found around the Marina to cater for the most exigent of taste. The variety is so wide that is difficult to choose from the traditional fish, seafood and regional gastronomy with a fine Portuguese flavour to the exquisite of the “nouvelle cuisine”.
For those who enjoy shopping this is an ideal place. The colourful shops windows are an invitation difficult to resist. Choose from well known international trade marks to the more regional and rustic shops.
Vilamoura is fronted by three kilometres of golden sands. The choice is wide, from quiet, secluded beaches to those frequented by the personalities, artists and sportsmen who spend the summer in the resort. Unrivalled beauty and Blue Flag water quality, perfect for walks, windsurfing, water-skiing, jet-skiing and paragliding, or just relax pedalling a pedlo, fishing or enjoying a drink in one of the many restaurants and bars along the beach front.
Vilamoura has 5 of the best courses on the Algarve, the newest being Victoria which held the Golf World Cup in October 2005. Prices are reasonable and well worth trying even if you have never played before and are only 3 minutes drive away. Vilamoura has five championship standard 18-hole golf courses: The Old Course; The Pinhal Course; The Laguna; The New Victoria and The Millennium Course. Interspersed between these are beautiful, individual villas of all kinds and sizes.
