The Algarve / Central Algarve region
The Algarve occupies the extreme south-west of continental Europe. It is approximately 95 miles long and 30 miles wide, and is about one seventeenth of the total area of Portugal, covering 2,000 square miles.
Low ranges of mountains separate the Algarve from the rest of Portugal to the north, whilst the Guadiana River forms the natural frontier with Spain to the east. This is the Algarve's largest river, flowing for more than 500 miles from the Serra do Caldeirão and Serra do Malhão ranges down to the Atlantic Ocean at Vila Real.
The climate is very pleasant all the year round, with more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. July and August can be very hot, with little or no rainfall, a warm ocean and great sunbathing plus plenty of activity all around. March to June is warm, with hardly any rainfall, and the countryside is at its best and most beautiful, a great time for walkers and sightseers. November to February is often a sunny and mild time, very quiet and peaceful, but there can be erratic rainfall, and it can be cold at night. September and October are quite warm, but can have a little rainfall.
The N 125 road, which runs from Vila Real in the east to Vila do Bispo in the west, somewhat unequally divides the Algarve, into two parts. South of the road is where most of the 300,000 population lives, close to the beautiful Algarvian coastline. The north side of the road leads into the hills and mountains that separate the Algarve from the next province of Portugal, the Alentejo, and also provide the Algarve with a natural barrier against the elements of the north.
The Algarve boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, and can be characterised by its two distinct areas. The eastern side, known as the Sotavento (the leeward), is situated between Albufeira and Vila Real de Santo Antonio, the beaches along this coast being mainly long sandy stretches. The western coastline, known as the Barlavento (windward), and situated between Albufeira and Cape St. Vincent, has more variety, with a multitude of cove beaches, some of which are only accessible by boat.
In the far west at Sagres and Cape St. Vincent, the coastline is much more formidable, with cliffs rising to over 200 feet. There are a multitude of beaches along the Algarve coastline, and, incredibly, some you'll find almost deserted, even in summer time!
The Vilamoura / Vila Sol area
Vila Sol Vilamoura Spa & Golf Resort occupies 150 hectares in a stunning natural setting. The Resort is located in a calm, peaceful and safe region in one of Algarve’s most desirable zones - Vilamoura - five minutes from the international marina and quality and prestigious shopping, catering and leisure facilities.
The fabulous 27-hole golf area, designed by the architect Donald Steel, occupies a valley sculptured by nature and it is divided into three courses of different levels of difficulty: Prime/Challenge/Prestige.
The Vila Sol Spa has a total of 27 treatment rooms and the sheer variety of facials, body treatments and massages available will ensure that your every problem has a cure. The hydrotherapy treatments include Vichy showers, a seaweed bubble bath and a large Aquademic pool. There are alternative therapies available such as Pilates, Yoga and Osteopathy, also a hairdresser and pedicurist on site. The huge hammam provides the perfect place for relaxation inbetween treatments and there is a lovely relaxation area where you can lie down, sip some herbal teas and enjoy a good book.
Vilamoura: The name means "Moorish Village", and Vilamoura is claimed to be the largest privately developed resort in Portugal and maybe even Europe. Consisting of 4,000 acres, it has 3 golf courses, a private airstrip, large wooded areas, a huge yachting marina, a 12 court tennis club, a bowling club and shooting club (all of these open to non-members), a Casino, a Cinema and many bars, cafes, restaurants and boutiques.
Vilamoura Marina, with its colourful array of international yachts, is a splendid spot for relaxing after your evening meal. Enjoy a coffee and brandy in one of the cafes surrounding the Marina, and watch the world go by!
The area of Vilamoura was inhabited long before the Moors even arrived, as a local archaeologist discovered in 1963, when fragments of Roman mosaics were churned up by a tractor ploughing the north side of what is now the Marina. Archaeological excavations then took place and eventually uncovered the ruins of a Roman Nobleman's house, large Roman Baths, a Mausoleum and a farming or agricultural building. These ruins are open to the public daily and there is also a small museum on site displaying Visiogothic, Moorish and Roman artefacts.
Vilamoura's fantastic Falesia beach is situated to the west of the Marina, with over a mile of fine white sand. Falesia has quite a spectacular setting - sparkling blue sea in one direction contrasting with the towering red cliffs behind. Should you walk the full extent of this beach you will arrive at the small resort and fishing village of Olhos D'Agua (keep your eye on the tide for your return walk!).
Vilamoura has something to offer everyone, whether it be a fine meal and a stroll around the Marina, relaxing on the beach or a day of sporting activities.
