The Sotavento Islands / Maio Island region

The terrain around Maio is made up of forests in the northern part and the dry island desert dominates the rest of the area around Maio. A small salt marsh is situated to the Northwest. The mountains including a view of Monte Batalha dominates the northwest. The population has doubled between 1990 and 2005.
The Archipelago of Cape Verde is located in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 450km off the coast of Senegal, West Africa. The climate is tropical and dry with average temperatures of 25 degrees year round. The cooling sea breezes ensure it still remains pleasant to explore the islands, of which there are 10. Each island is unique making it an excellent place for island hopping. Santiago is the largest island and houses the capital, Praia. The most popular island with tourists is Sal, due to its excellent diving and surfing facilities. Maio has the most beautiful beaches in Cape Verde and is still almost untouched by tourism - a perfect place to relax after visiting the busier islands.
The Vila do Maio area
Vila do Maio, is a town in the south western part of the island of Maio in south eastern Cape Verde. It is the main urban settlement of the island, and also seat of the Maio Municipality.
The town is still (colloquially) known by its old name, Porto Inglês (Portuguese for "English port" in which was founded, Cape Verdean Creole: Port’ Inglês), in opposition of the older Porto Português (present day Calheta).
The town is the 14th largest city in Cape Verde after Picos. Vila do Maio is linked with the island's highway serving to the eastern and the northern portions of the island especially to Pedro Vaz and Morrinho.
Vila do Maio has a nice port serving ferry routes only to the island of Santiago with Praia. The terrain around Maio is made up of forests in the northern part and the dry island desert dominates the rest of the area around Maio. A small salt marsh is situated to the north west.

After a recent visit to Cape Verde, we didn't know what to expect when we went to stay at Stella Maris. What a lovely villa, the description on their web page was certainly accurate. The infinity pool was seconds away and the beach a few minutes down private steps. If you like snorkelling then this is the place. Fresh fish was also available from the locals at the harbour. We were collected from the airport and looked after during our stay. The views were great and it was so peaceful and quiet. It was value for money and we are certainly recommending it to our friends. |
