There is private access to a small-secluded sandy * beach accessible by villa owners down steps built into the cliff. The steps to this beach are on the other side of the pool that can be seen from the bedroom window, about fifty meters from the villa. On the other side of the small beach is the town of Vila Do Maio.
A short walk down through the town brings you out on the street overlooking the long white sandy main beach that runs all the way from Vila do Maio through the little town of Morro to Calheta. It's the place the fishermen bring in their catch and where the locals like to hang out. It's also a fantastic place for swimming and if you are brave enough jumping off the cliff into the sea just as the local kids do. About 12 min along the coast in the other direction is Ponta Preta beach. It runs many kilometres south without any sign of civilization. Between the two big beaches is a secluded cove just below Stella Maris Village that is a fantastic place to go snorkelling.
* Please note: At certain times of the year the waves in Cape Verde can be quite large and this can make bathing in the sea challenging. However this doesn't normally last more than a day or two. Sometimes under these conditions the sand can shift quite dramatically. The small beach close to the villa usually has less sand June to November (occasionally none) and much more sand December to May. Villa Do Maio main beach (8 min) and Ponta Pretta beach (12 min) always have sand.
Climate & Weather:
The climate is tropical and dry. The average daytime temperature remains around 25°C and whilst there are highs and lows the changes do not exceed 10°C (Min 15°C Max 35°C). The sea temperature is between 23°C in February and up to 27°C in September (several degrees warmer than the Canaries). The northeast trade winds are at their strongest between January & April. The rest of the year the wind is variable from calm to moderate. Rainfall is very rare; it doesn't normally rain at all between November & August. From mid August to mid October it is hot, humid with the occasional heavy shower.
To sum up:
There are long stretches of perfect white sandy beaches, quiet towns, warm clear waters with very little commercialism and friendliest locals in anywhere in Cape Verde. This is the perfect 'away from it all' destination where time seems to stand still. Despite its isolation Maio is a beautiful island to visit and the perfect place to enjoy long uninterrupted walks along the deserted beaches. At the right time of year you are likely to see turtles, whales, flying fish and dolphins. If you want to get away from it all and experience the real Cape Verde for sure this is the right place for you…

The Cape Verde Islands
The Archipelago of Cape Verde is located in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 450km off the coast of Senegal, West Africa. The climate is tropical and dry with average temperatures of 25 degrees year round. The cooling sea breezes ensure it still remains pleasant to explore the islands, of which there are 10. Each island is unique making it an excellent place for island hopping. Santiago is the largest island and houses the capital, Praia. The most popular island with tourists is Sal, due to its excellent diving and surfing facilities. Maio has the most beautiful beaches in Cape Verde and is still almost untouched by tourism - a perfect place to relax after visiting the busier islands.

Vila do Maio
Description of Vila Do Maio town
Vila do Maio, is a town in the south-western part of the island of Maio in south-eastern Cape Verde. It is the main urban settlement of the island, and also seat of the Maio Municipality.
The town is still (colloquially) known by its old name, Porto Inglês (Portuguese for "English port" in which was founded, Cape Verdean Creole: Port' Inglês), in opposition of the older Porto Português (present day Calheta).
The town is the 14th largest city in Cape Verde after Picos. Vila do Maio is linked with the island's highway serving the eastern and the northern portions of the island especially to Pedro Vaz and Morrinho. Vila do Maio has a port with ferry routes to the island of Santiago.
How to get there
Internal flights: To get to Maio you need to take the 20 min flight from Praia (The capital) with the local airline TACV. At the time of writing (06.02.15) the flights go on Tuesday & Friday. This changes to Monday, Wednesday and Friday from from 1st June 2015. You can book your flights with Visa and MasterCard on their website.
International flights: Cape Verde has four international airports with over 40 flights a week to the islands of; Sal, Boa Vista, Sao Vicente and Praia. You can fly to any of them and still use the local flights to connect however it's better to go direct to the capital (unless you want to go island hopping). We usually suggest TAP as they go from most European destinations however all the airlines below go to Cape Verde. If you need help with your international flights please contact us with your preferred city of departure and we will try to find the best route for you.
A visa is required, this can be bought on arrival for €25. Please note: there is also a ferry service however the frequency and timing of the ferry is subject to sea conditions.
