Why stay: Visit the festival “Soho in Ottakring“ / Shopping at Central Europe's largest open-air market - the Brunnenmarkt
Description: Ottakring was established by a Bavarian colony about 1000 years ago. It is an area with numerous different sites of interest delimited by the main avenue the Gürtelstrasse, familiarly known as Gürtel by the Viennese. The avenue is built on the site of the former second wall that ran around the centre of Vienna, no longer in existence since it was destroyed during the mandate of Emperor Franz Joseph I subsequently allowing the city to expand (the first wall of Vienna is today marked by the Ringstrasse).
The north of Ottakring is home to the oldest tavern in Vienna - the 10er Marie. In the past it was the meeting point of many famous politicians and members of Viennese society and today continues its fame as one of the most popular wine taverns in the city.
The whole neighbourhood has a notably cosmopolitan and ethnic atmosphere. Numerous exotic products can be found on display in the well-known market, the Brunnenmarkt open on a daily basis, and selling a wide range of food, clothing and all kinds of utensils. A busy, happy spot, it is a little piece of Turkey within the city, with the majority of stalls run by Turks (the largest number of immigrants in Vienna).
