The Lower Austria/Vienna region
Lower Austria (Niederösterreich), known as "the cradle of Austria's history," is the largest of the nine federal states. It's named Lower Austria because it sits lower on the Danube, which flows through it from west to east. It lies on Vienna's doorstep and can easily be visited from there.
This historic area was once heavily fortified, as some 550 fortresses and castles testify -- many are still standing, but often in ruins.. At the foothills of the Alps is Wiener Neustadt, the former imperial city. Along the Danube, Dürnstein, with terraced vineyards, was where Richard the Lion-Hearted was held prisoner. Many monasteries and churches, from Romanesque and Gothic structures to the much later baroque abbeys, are also found in Lower Austria. Klosterneuburg Abbey dates from 1114, and Heiligenkreuz, founded in 1133, is the country's most ancient Cistercian abbey. The province is filled with vineyards, and in summer it booms with music festivals and classical and contemporary theater.
Vienna is the capital and largest city of Austria and one of the country’s nine states. As the nation’s cultural, economic, and political center, there is much to see.
Main attractions in the city include the gothic St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Imperial Palace, the art nouveau richness of the Secession, the magnificent baroque palace of Schönbrunn, the Museum of Fine Arts, and modern architecture at the Museums Quartier. The country has 27 castles and more than 150 palaces to explore.
Within Vienna are more than 100 museums, some hosting collections of world caliber. Not to be missed is The Albertina, which has one of the largest and most valuable graphical collections, with works from Monet and Picasso to Baselitz, Dürer, and Klimt.
Other top art museums include Künstlerhaus, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and Kunst Haus Vienna.
The city’s concert halls and stages showcase programs from classical to progressive, with end-to-end festivals throughout the year. Opera fans will meet international stars here and jazz lovers will appreciate its jazz scene. Pop and rock concerts provide unforgettable live music experiences.
