About this location
The Vienna Region
In brief: District home to the embassies / Cultural residential district
Highlights: St Rochus Church / Belvedere Palace / Hundertwassehaus /Arsenal
Why stay: Most important monuments / Beautiful terraces all along the River Danube
This district is located to the south of the historical centre and is distinguished by its residential atmosphere and busy population. It is a uniform district housing numerous embassies and open green areas, and is especially well-known by tourists for the XVIII century Belvedere Castle. The two buildings are set in an extensive area, and are joined by a park that was built in 1716 by Prince Eugene of Savoy to demonstrate his power and increase his popularity. The first building to be constructed was the castle itself (lower Belvedere) that was designed as a summer residence for the Prince. The French-style gardens were created at the same time, with an impeccable symmetry that gives a really amplified vision of the park. A second building was added later (upper Belvedere) with huge rooms that clearly reflect the Savoy magnificence. Since 1919 the property belongs to the state and is home to the Museum of Medieval Art, and with a Gallery dedicated to Austrian art that includes the works of Gustav Klimt and Egon Shiele. Visitors simply must include a stroll along the Kegelgasse and visit numbers 34 – 38 - the site of the Hundertwasserhaus, a municipal residential complex that was built between 1983 and 1986 by the architect and artist Friedensreich Hunderwasser. Its irregular shape reflects a philosophy that completely rejects any straight or rigid forms, moving towards organic shapes and a search for reconciliation between humans and nature. The district also boasts a wide cultural offer including the University of Music and Stage Arts and the CAT (Contemporary Art Tower) located in the Arenberg Park. The area following the Donaukanal (Danube Canal) becomes increasingly lively as the summer approaches, and as the vegetation flowers along the river banks, sun beds are placed along the water for passers-by to stop and take a rest, whilst the bars lay out their terraces and the river boat-bars prepare for the numerous tourists and locals who come to enjoy a water-front dinner whilst admiring a beautiful Viennese sun set.
