Apartment "Gretl" is a spacious self-catering holiday apartment, comprising of 2 bedrooms, living room, kitchen/dining area, shower room, south facing balcony with magnificant views, heated ski/boot room, laundry room and sauna use (by prior arrangement).
Located in Chalet Alte Bachmuhle, the old Water Mill, it has been sympathetically renovated in a rustic style with all modern conveniences. Offering luxury accommodation for a family or small groups, combining a truly Austrian blend of old character and charm along with modern living.
Viehhofen is ideally located to allow guests to enjoy the best of this stunning region of Austria in both summer and winter. The village is also the centre of a new plan to link the resorts of Zell-am-See with additional lifts directly to the Schmittenhohe mountain in the Zell ski area which has been started and will be completed by ski season 2016/17, making Viehhofen the centre of the largest ski area in Austria, offering over 370km of pistes.
This is an ideal location for skiers of all levels. The ski bus stop is 50m from the apartment which takes approx 5 mins to the nearest Gondola. Ski back into Viehhofen village. Ideal for beginners as Viehhofen boasts its own quiet Nursery slope and well run Ski school with English speaking instructors welcoming adults and children from 3 yrs old (or out of nappies). The Kindergarten ski school offers an all-day minding service for young children and will include lunch. You can ski directly back to the Nursery slope via a blue run from the main ski area, which makes it easy for meeting at lunchtime or after ski school with your children. The village offers a variety of bars & restaurants, ski hire shops and a well-stocked supermarket. There are friendly, helpful staff at our local tourist office and a bank which has a 24 hr ATM. This area has access to some of the most exciting skiing and extreme sports in Austria, winter and summer.

The apartment is located on the 1st floor and is on one level. You enter at ground level as the chalet is built into the hillside. There are just 2 steps to access the apartment, no hassle of lifts and steep stairs. Spacious open plan living area with a large sofa bed . Two separate bedrooms, shower room/WC. magnificent balcony that spans the full length of the apartment, table & chairs for eating out in the summer. Electric BBQ available. For your added convenience there is a heated ski/ boot room in the basement area.

The balcony is south facing and there is a table & chairs or you can BBQ on summer evenings. The balcony receives sun from the early morning until mid/late afternoon and then moves to the side of the property for the evening. There is a large grassed area for communal use, we have chairs & a sun-bed for you to use on the balcony, or you can sit out on the lawned area in the summer. The garden area is a pleasant and safe area for young children to play if supervised as it is not fenced off from the quiet lane. The side of the chalet has open views over fields. There is one designated off-street parking space for the apartment. When you arrive please observe which is the parking space for Apartment Gretl. A plan is available in the entrance hall of the Chalet. More parking is available at the bottom of the road in the Public parking place. Very quiet and peaceful location, just a short stroll from local restaurants, shops and all local amenities. You can hear the stream from the balcony, lovely walks from the door.
20% deposit required when booking. We do take last minute weekends/week bookings depending on availability in the low season. There is a cleaning/laundry charge of approx £100 per week (this will be confirmed on booking as this varies from season to season).
All local tax is included in your rental unless a long-term rental.
The Salzburg Region
Salzburgerland is beautiful Winter and Summer and is the home of "The Sound of Music". Viehhofen is located in the Ski-Circus ski area incorporating Leogang, Viehhofen, Vorderglemm, Saalbach and Hinterglemm. Viehhofen is ideally located to allow guests to enjoy the best of this stunning region of Austria in both summer and winter.
The nearest airports are located at Saltzburg (1 hour 15 mins transfer time) and Munich (2 hours 30 mins transfer time).
In the 2015/16 ski season Fieberbrunn in the Tirol is being linked to Hinterglemm by a 6 man chair lift, making a total of 240km of pistes with 68 lifts. The village is also the centre of a new plan to link the resorts of Zell-am-See with additional lifts directly to the Schmittenhohe mountain in the Zell ski area, which has been started and will be completed by ski season 2016/17, making Viehhofen the centre of the largest ski area in Austria, offering over 370km of pistes.
Nearby Zell-am-see offers an additional 200 km skiing and the Kaprun Glacier is open most of the year. Snow cannons operate throughout the resort to guarantee a compelling ski experience. Viehhofen is a winter and summer resort and in the summer the area attracts thousands of walkers and bikers. The cable car systems continues to operate from June - October for walkers and bikers to access the mountains.
The beautiful turquoise river Saalach briskly flows along the tree lined valley, surrounded by the Gerkogel, Schmitt & Sausteige Mountains rising to 2,175 m with over 200km of Alpine skiing.
The Kitzsteinhorn Glacier is located a short drive away, offering 41kms of exceptionally high skiing, most of which is available from November to May. Other winter activities include:
- Toboganning runs at Saalbach and Hinterglemm
- Ice driving and Karting at Voderglemm
- Austrian curling and Ice skating at nearby Zell-am-see ice rink
- Quad biking in Viehhofen
- Thermal spa at Kaprun
- Romantic sleigh rides at the top of the valley from Lengua to Lindlingalm
- Scenic flights from Zell-am-see air strip
During the summer months you can walk, play golf, climb, horse ride, mountain bike ride, road cycle, white water raft, canyoning, zip lining or simply relax at one of the several outdoor pools in Saalbach or Lake Zell-am-see where you are also able to swim, sail or water-ski during the summer months.
A must is a day trip to Salzburg, the provincal capital of Slalzburgerland which is within easy access. Saltzburg is just over 1 hours drive from Viehhofen, or you can take a train from Zell-am-see. Salzburg has a wealth of beautiful historic buildings. You can visit the Mozart Museum and his home where the composor composed his famous works. You can listen to his music as there are concerts nightly at different venues throughout Salzburg. There is a wonderful Christmas Market in the weeks leading up to Christmas, or just wander around the pretty cobbled streets with quaint shops and medieval arcades. The castle located on a hill overlooking the city has magnificent views of the old town and the spectacular snow capped peaks of the Alps in the distance. The "Sound of Music" tour is lovely for those fans wanting to re-trace the steps of the Family Von Trap during the 2nd world war. Information on the many tours is available from the local tourist office in Viehhofen or in Salzburg.
This region has something for everyone, Winter and Summer, whatever your age.
Viehhofen is a traditional Austrian village full of charm. A quieter resort than Saalbach,/Hinterglemm, but it has everything you need for an action packed ski holiday in the winter or an adventure holiday in the summer, or just simply relax and enjoy the sun and the magnificent scenery.
Convenient access to ski school/nursery slopes and the ski bus stop to the nearest main lift. The village has its own supermarket, Bank/ATM, tourist office, 2 ski hire shops and several lovely restaurants and apres-bars to try.
It's an ideal location for families and small groups and the local skiing is suitable for all levels of skier and boarder. Plenty of Winter and Summer activities. All year round skiing at the Kitsteinhorn Glacier at Kaprun just 20 mins drive away. Beautiful walks round Lake Zell-am-see and visit the famous Grossglockner pass.
