The Auvergne region

The Auvergne is a relatively undiscovered part of France. It contains a wide variety of terrain, a diverse natural life, and is historically very interesting. The village of Bayet set above the river Sioule looks across to the Montagne Bourbonnaise and the northern edge of the Livradois-Forez Park, the largest natural park in Europe. The region has exceptional landscapes and is rich in flora and fauna. There are lots of lovely walks in the area, from the gentle to the more demanding. Some can be taken from the house itself.

The Rivers Sioule and Allier (very local) offer canoing and fishing. The Puy de Dôme and the Auvergne Volcanic Regional Nature Park is an hour-and-a-half away where there is spectacular walking and climbing. You can also visit Vulcania, the volcano exhibition centre and museum. The whole area is famous for its Romanesque churches, some with medieval paintings, and its medieval castles. There are also many interesting towns and villages to visit such as Charroux , Vichy and St.Pourçain-sur-Sioule.

Bayet is essentially a very pretty village set in the countryside near St. Pourçain-sur-Sioule and not far from Vichy. Around the village in the gentle rolling countryside are open fields and forest land. It has an excellent restaurant in the village square, a quiet stroll away from the gite, that is open every day at lunchtime. You can order your fresh bread & croissant from here too.

Tennis courts are available within walking distance of the chalet. There are rackets and balls in the chalet.

In the old town there is a 15th century watchtower, now converted into a clocktower, and the 11th century church of Saint-Croix, which combines both roman and gothic elements in its design, and contains some interesting 15th century decorative elements.

In the centre of the old town you can also stroll through the site of the original abbey buildings and cloisters.

The benedictine courtyard also contains the Wine museum in a 15th century church building (the 'Maison du Baillage').

There is a nice view of the town from the 17th century bridge across the river.

A large market is held in St-Pourçain-sur-Sioule on a Saturday morning, just off the broad boulevard 'below' the old town, where there are many shops, cafés and excellent restaurants .

Bicycles can be hired in St. Pourçain.

Vichy, an elegant spa town with its 'fin de siecle' architecture and shops, is only 20 minutes away. Concerts, plays and operas are regularly performed in the beautiful opera house. There is a seven-screen cinema and there are some great restaurants in the centre. The town regularly hosts national and international sporting events .

Many of the buildings date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, in part due to the development of Vichy as a spa town; it was a favourite place for Napoleon III. The beautiful 'plan d'eau' and park alongside it are well worth a visit. Also the opera house and casino buildings are architecturally interesting.

Vichy also offers elegant shops and wonderful spa treatments.

The town has an unusual museum that is of interest to film and theatre enthusiasts - a National Centre for Costumes. Set in a large 18th century building the centre holds many thousands of costumes from the collections of the National Opera and the Comedie Francaise.

Another interesting museum is La Maison Mantin, an impressive grand townhouse that was owned in the 19th century by a wealthy member of the local gentry. On his death it was simply closed up and forgotten for 100 years along with all its furnishings. The house has now been 'rediscovered', renovated and opened to the public, in accordance with the original wishes of M Mantin (who died in 1905), and features a very extensive collection of furnishings, antiques and art works.

Moulin also has an interesting historical centre, based around the cathedral and surrounding streets and has several interesting monuments to discover.
