The Veneto region

The Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio shaped the world that surrounds us today.

Some of his most influential villas survive in the Veneto region around Venice, Italy.

Vicenza represents a unique artistic achievement in the many architectural contributions from Andrea Palladio integrated within its historic fabric and creating its overall character. Through its architecture, the city has exerted exceptional influence on architectural and urban design in most European countries and throughout the world.

Vicenza is situated in the Veneto region of northern Italy on the low hills between the mountains of Berici and Lessini, on a natural communication route. The city of Vicenza was founded in the 2nd or 1st century BC by the Veneti and was granted Roman citizenship with the status of municipium in 49 BC. The ancient town plan is still recognizable in that of the modern town, Corso Palladio being the decumanus maximus and Contra Porti the cardo maximus.

Among the public buildings erected from the time of Augustus that survive are the remains of the theatre, now incorporated in a more recent structure, and sections of the aqueduct to the north of the city.

Asolo (70 km)

is a town dating back to pre-Roman times, located in a magnificent spot above a hill overlooking the plain. Asolo has a charm that few other towns possess, starting with its glorious and unusual history. Famous figures such as the English poet Robert Browning, the actress Eleonora Duse and the explorer Freya Stark all lived here. At the end of the 1400's it was also home and prison to the Queen of Cyprus, Caterina Cornaro, to whom Venice offered the symbolic dominion of the town in exchange for rule over the Cypriot kingdom.

Marostica (50 km)

Situated in the foothills, just half an hour's drive from Vicenza and a few minutes away from Bassano del Grappa, Marostica is surrounded by the ancient walls of its castles, as if it wants to symbolize its discreet elegance. This finds its moment of greatest expression and renown in the world famous Chess Game.

Every September of an even numbered year, this human chess game is played on the square of Marostica. It occurs every second Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Bassano del Grappa (57 km)

The town is situated at the point where the flat Veneto plains reach the hills leading up to the Alps; it takes its name from the nearby Monte Grappa. The four things for which Bassano del Grappa is best known are its covered bridge over the Brenta, the strong grappa liqueur produced in the area, the military history of Monte Grappa and locally-produced ceramics. Like so many of the Veneto's historic towns, this is a prosperous place and is studded with smart clothes and furnishings shops. The architecture reflects Bassano's location: typical Veneto-style arcaded streets and piazzas are interspersed with alpine wooden balconies, and some of the hostelries have a decidedly Austrian flavour.

Recoaro (40km)

its history as a spa was ennobled, from its origin as the first thermal centre of the Venetian Republic until the early 1900s, by the aristocracy who frequented it, and whose presence can still be felt today in the gardens and elegant villas around the area.

The surrounding nature is enchanting, as is the view offered from every corner of the plain in which it is situated. A cableway connects it to Recoaro Terme.

Recoaro Mille is a gem among the holiday resorts of the Piccole Dolomiti, with piste. suitable for every level.
