The Tuscany / Firenze Province region

Tuscany hardly needs introduction, but the Mugello area just north of Florence is yet to be fully discovered and appreciated. Its gently rolling hills have remained unspoilt and unlike other parts of Tuscany, farming is still an activity over here. The landscape is peppered with Medici castles and Villas, as this was the hunting ground of the famous family. The vicinity of Florence (one hour away by train!) makes this an ideal spot to combine relaxation and sightseeing. Other splendid art cities, like Siena, Lucca, Arezzo, are easily reached for a day's excursion.
The Vicchio area
Little towns like Scarperia, Vicchio and Dicomano and the capital of the Mugello, Borgo San Lorenzo are well worth visiting, for their simple and genuine appearance. The climate is several degrees cooler than Florence, and even in the height of summer one wears a wrap or lightweight jacket in the evening. Every day there is a local market in one of the towns, and for shopping lovers, the newly built Barberino outlet is well worth a visit. Lake Bilancino offers bathing and wind surfing possibilities, and the nearby Poggio ai Medici golf course is one of Europe's best. Horse back riding is a favourite sport in the Mugello and there are plenty of opportunities for horse lovers, including a new ly tracked excursions on horseback.
