The Swiss Alps / Valais/Swiss Alps region
The skiing region known as the Swiss Four Valleys consists of Veysonnaz, Nendaz, and Thyon. Together they make up a big, beautiful and challenging ski playground for all ages, skills and experience. And, if you choose, the whole combo can be had on one super ski pass.
This of course gives you the opportunity to choose either the whole big ski area, or the less daunting and taxing skiing in the village confines. In fact there are 3 lift pass options, one for the Veysonnaz region alone, one which includes the whole of the Four Valleys, and one which includes all of the above as well as the Mont Fort. Prices range from SF216 to 285 at writing, with a good saving for families.
There is even a decent amount of cross country skiing at fairly high altitudes here, so lovers of that sport can enjoy the area too. There is good night life in town and a most International clientele. This will be especially welcome to those of you who want to meet a good cross section of Europeans on your ski holiday to Europe. To get to Veysonnaz look for Sion. It is about 30 minutes from there. The nearest airports are Zurich, Geneva and Basel.
There is an excellent ski school with local guides providing lessons for beginners in ski-ing and snowboarding, together with tuition and guiding for inter-mediate and experienced skiers wanting to improve their carving techniques.
Veysonnaz area
The chalet is situated at 1400 m in the small and friendly Swiss village of Veysonnaz which offers excellent ski-ing facilities over a wide range of resorts and abilities from Veysonnaz to Nandez and onwards to Verbier. A bus stop just a few metres from the chalet will take you to the telecabin lift in the middle of the village and on to the lift at the bottom of the Piste de l'Ours, both of which take you up the mountain from where you can enjoy a huge variety of ski-ing for all ages and abilities.
The ski school is excellent with a variety of friendly and professional ski instructors, so you can engage a cool, young instructor to teach you or your children snowboarding or ski-ing, or engage one of the those wonderful instructors with the enviable style to teach you the wonders of carving. They are great people with plenty of humour and stories of the region.
A car from the airport is an excellent solution giving hassle free transportation of skis etc. to the ski lifts with free parking. The garage with the chalet offers secure overnight parking.
The season runs from a few weeks before Christmas until the middle of April. The most famous run, ‘The path of the bear’ (Piste de L’Ours) is a frequent location for Alpine Ski World Cup competition and across the four valleys are a total of 100 runs, the majority red, but a quarter are blue and the remaining five are black. Ample gondolas, chair lifts and surface lifts get you to the top of the runs with ease, whilst the use of snow cannons ensure the runs will be in great condition for you when you get there. It is possible to ski to Verbier in less than an hour, taking in the spectacular glacier at Mont Fort along the way. For those interested in alternative snow pursuits there are specific runs for snowboarding, and also routes for snow shoe treks. As you would expect the town offers a full range of facilities for ski/snow board hire, lessons and ski-locker facilities.
Get up on the slopes early one day for a full days ski-ing and exploring of the Mont Fort slopes where you can made the decision to ski towards home or over to Verbier and Nendaz. There are some great restaurants on the way for a gluwein, hot chocolate and energy giving carbo-filled lunches.
In summer the village is a fantastic base for anyone who enjoys walking or cycling, offering you the chance to make your own way around the 300km of well-signposted paths and trails. For the younger holidaymaker there is plenty do as well. Various activities are organized throughout the summer for children aged four and over, with two different age-group ranges varying the scope of what is available. For the 4-8 yr olds the focus is on theme days and activities such as donkey riding. For the older children and for adults more active pursuits such as archery, mountain bike tours, football and tennis are all available.
Veysonnaz has a new high speed gondola. 4 sports hire shops, 3 supermarkets, a bakery, 2 banks.
