About the home
Chalet Lachlan is almost on a mountaintop, and although most people associate the Alps with skiing, in fact every season brings different charms and activities, making any time perfect for a holiday or short break.
In winter and spring, the skiing is arguably the best in Europe.
Drive in to heated garages; a lift connects the first three floors. Downstairs are three double bedrooms, two bathrooms, one shower room, two separate WC's; a sauna, a laundry room, and an office (which could be a nanny room instead). Moving up a level, a vast open plan area, furnished in leather, oak and granite. On the top floor are two master rooms, a bathroom and a shower room. Outdoor terraces on all levels provide views from Crans in the east to Siviez in the west.
The Chalet is close to the telecabine; the restaurants (seven in the village), the bars, the ski hire shops, shops generally, the post office and the Wellness centre. The local swimming pool is 150metres from the Chalet.
The Chalet is a short walk to the telecabine; this connects to 440km of pistes. There is a village navette which stops 50metres away from the chalet. (Free bus). At the telecabine the ski schools have their offices, but we can pre book all this for you.
In early summer you can walk or do mountain biking amongst the alpine flowers; watch the Herens cows battle for the Queen of the region; enjoy the music festivals in Verbier and Montreux (the train services in Switzerland are second to none); eat the local fruit including apricots, raspberries; visit Lake Geneva, the Chateau de Chillon, swim in the thermal springs (there are several near us) and in the autumn, enjoy the amazing brilliant colours as the leaves turn across the valleys rivalling anything on the other side of the pond.

The Swiss Alps / Valais/Swiss Alps region

Veysonnaz is a small village, not too long ago a farming community.
It is in Valais, in the French speaking part of Switzerland (in the Four Valley skiing area, Verbier is 90 minutes away either by car or ski or train).
Most people have only visited Veysonnnaz to ski, and have loved it!
It is in the middle of the Four Valleys; but, quieter than its famous neighbour. The slopes can be almost deserted on some weeks, queues unheard of.
Within minutes of the top of the telecabine; we have a tipi, great for meeting before the torchlight descents held every week; the snow park for boarders and skiers caters for all standards, and the runs are so good, choppers regularly drop off top notch skiers to practice on Le Piste de L'ours. An amazing run, and its only one of the great pistes here.
Sion, Valais capital, is in the valley, 20 minutes away by car. Sion is about equidistant to Geneva and Milan by rail (2 hours). It has its own airport, and all amenities offered by large towns, including superb hospital, museums, and shops. It is a strong cultural area with regular concerts and exhibitions. Sion also hosts numerous festivals to celebrate the harvest of fruit, of wine, the numerous Swiss holidays. The Swiss Post Bus serves the whole region, connecting Veysonnaz to Sion station. It carries bikes in summer, skis in winter.
In summer it is hot in Veysonnaz, 25 to 30 degrees is common. The autumn is also quite warm making hiking a wonderful pastime, especially along the bises, old irrigation canals dug out hundreds of years ago.
Winter and the snow can arrive as early as October, or as late as December. Temperatures then fall, and snow covers the region for months. The roads are gritted several times a day, making travel by car quite easy. Once the snows melt, the alpine flowers start emerging creating the most wonderful and colourful meadows imaginable. Wild lupins abound, and the local fruits, apricots and raspberries are evident as you ascend the mountain.
The Veysonnaz area
There are so many things to do in the mountains.
Some like to drive and see "everything". Suggestions for them are listed below. It is possible never to get in your car, yet enjoy so much locally. Join the other ten or so thousand who converge on Aproz, near Sion for the annual final of Le Combat des Reines. Marvellous entertainment....cows batting horns, unbelievably riveting.
• Verbier : The Verbier Festival is an international music festival that takes place annually for 2 weeks in late July and early August.
• Montreux : The Montreux Jazz Festival is the best-known music festival in Switzerland and one of the most prestigious in Europe; it is held annually in early July. It is also on Lake Geneva, so boat trips around the lake are easily made. Also, Le Chateau de Chillon, where Bryon was imprisioned, is next to Montreux.
• Martigny : There are few more dramatically sited cities in Switzerland than here. Set down on the broad valley floor, with wooded heights soaring on all sides, with Roman ruins, historic churches, close to the Grand St Bernard Pass and Forclaz pass
• Sion: the capital of the Canton Valais, also hosts a music festival every summer, now in its 43rd year.
• Vecorin: best paragliding in the country; lessons available
• Crans Montana for tennis and golf in the lap of luxury, plus every designer shop in one small town
Chateau D’Oex annual hot air balloon display
• Grimentz and Villars: two chocolate box villages to visit
• Heremence: stunning valley with limestone outcrops just like Cappadocia, and an enormous picturesque glacier as a backdrop
• La Grand Dixence: the biggest dam in Europe; you can walk around and underneath and see close up the engineering feats of such a project
• La Dame de Sion; local wines, never exported, endless vineyards and excellent restaurants
• St Leonard: the biggest underwater lake in Europe (open only in summer)
• Combat de Reines…well it’s a cow combat, bloodless but very entertaining, cows battle it out for the title of « Queen of the Mountain » !
