1¼ miles from Veryan and 50 yards past S409, at the end of the lane, a strong, typically Cornish 17th cent. farmhouse: a splendid family house in an excellent situation. Small front garden and ½ acre of mown grassy space (table/chairs). Lovely views, the sea ½ mile away just visible from upstairs windows; Carne and Pendower beaches, a mile walk (the two merge at low-tide to give a mile of sand). Nat. Trust land surrounds the house to a mile radius. Very private: only the occasional farmer herding sheep passes by. Living room with open fire, TV/DVD, iPod dock; dining room (slate-floored); fitted kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer); downstairs cloakroom with loo, washing machine; and outside, 10 paces from the kitchen door, shower-room (suite plus power-shower), ideal for sandy bodies. Utility room with tumble drier and deckchairs. Upstairs, four bedrooms – one double (5' bed), three twin (5'7" lintel on landing). Bathroom (suite). A friendly place, family owned, family used.

The West Country region

Cornwall's 'Med': here is Cornwall at its warmest, most sheltered; of creeks and tidal waters penetrating deep inland, deep in woods, silent except for birdsong; of wonderful gardens growing things that live nowhere else outdoors in England (marvellous in rhododendron, camellia, magnolia time, from March to end of May especially); of sailing boats everywhere decorating the sea; of harbour villages where the light is Mediterranean - dazzling in the sunshine. And really very little that is ugly has been allowed to be built.

Here is Truro, Cornwall's (small) capital, with its 20th century cathedral; Falmouth, resort town and cargo/cruise ship/yacht port, superbly sited; and the glorious Helford River. Trewithen, Trelissick, Glendurgan, Trebah, Heligan (Lost Gardens of) and Caerhays are among the finest gardens. In the very middle of Cornwall, Lanhydrock house is very special, so is its garden. Not the greatest area for beaches, but good sandy ones near Veryan and Portscatho, in St Mawes, and around Falmouth and the Helford River's mouth. Not to be missed is St Just-in-Roseland's churchyard; nor - within easy reach - is The Eden Project (see South Cornwall).

Veryan

Veryan: little wooded-valley village (good pub) a mile from the sea in one of the loveliest parts of Cornwall. Nat. Trust cliffs, coves, sandy beaches, tiny fishing villages; close inland, the wooded Fal estuary creeks. St Mawes and Mevagissey (large village), 7 miles. St Just in Roseland, 5. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Eden Project and Truro (Cornwall's capital), 10.
