The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The Perigord Vert is a large region in Aquitaine famous for great food and produce, and with historical links to the UK through Eleanor of Aquitaine, the mother of Richard the Lionheart. Aptly named because of the verdancy of the fields and surrounding rolling hills, Verteillac is a typical French town the centre of which has been recently renovated and smartened to provide external eating areas for the cafes and restaurants.

The area is mostly farming land, with fields of sun flowers, maize, rapeseed and linseed. There are also farms for ducks, geese, cattle and goats in the immediate area, all adding to the pastoral views to be seen on all sides.

The Romans occupied this region for many years and there are structural remains to be visited in many surrounding villages and towns, including many churches still used today. The capital Perigueux is a busy town with some excellent shopping facilities, and visits to Riberac, Brantome, Angouleme, Villebois Lavalette and other local towns are a must, where you will find markets selling local produce, usually of very high quality.

Very popular area with the busy village of Verteillac on the doorstep. Lots of local activities including horse riding, canoeing, tennis, golf, etc. Verteillac can provide all your daily needs with butcher, baker, grocer, bank, post office, paper shop, hairdressers, cafes, bars and restaurants. Monthly brocante held in the village first Sunday of each month and very popular night market towards the end of July.

La Source is surrounded by open fields in this verdant and beautiful area of France. The area is famous for wild orchids in early summer, and my garden and pond attract a large variety of wild birds, butterflies and other insects. Calm, peaceful and restoring, your views over the open countryside from the house and surrounding walks are stunning and uninterrupted.

Lots of interesting and historic towns to visit including Riberac, Perigueux, Angloueme, and many local Roman churches and structures to explore. Great market at Riberac on Friday mornings, not to be missed, a photographers dream, with excellent local produce and goods for sale including oysters, fresh fish, cheeses and vegetables.
