The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

Within easy reach of Verteillac/Vendoire there is a number of interesting places which will delight you. The town of Nontron is some 12 miles north and is set among attractive lakes that provide ideal picnic sites. It stands high up on a rock fortified by massive ramparts and has a picturesque 18th century chateau. This is a perfect place for children as it houses a lively museum of dolls, models, games and toys. Also here are the satirical puppets from the Bebete TV show (like the English Splitting Image).

A short drive from the villa there is the medieval town of Brantome where it is a delight to walk around the remarkable and ancient abbey founded by Charlemagne (742-814). With its soaring campanile this is one of the most elegant medieval and Renaissance buildings in the Dordogne, complete with caves used by the monks as kitchens and cellars.

The town sits on a bend of the river Dronne and a stroll along the riverside is an unforgettable experience. Loads of brilliant restaurants complete the experience – you will come back. There are also boats trips available.

About 10 km down the river you come to the pretty village of Bourdeilles where there are two chateaux of different periods built on a fortified hill – a medieval fortress (13th – 14th century) and a Renaissance palace (16th) with a remarkable collection of furniture. On the river Dronne you can rent a canoe

Just a short distance away there is the town of Riberac and is renowned for its Friday market – the best in the area ad well worth a visit.

Not very far away is the town of Grottes de Villars and a short distance north of the town are the caves with some impressive stalactites and paintings more than 17,000 years old. It was discovered in 1953 and is the largest underground network in the Perigord. The underground river has hollowed out huge chambers connected to each other by galleries.

Nearby is the Chateau de Puyguilhem in a village of the same name. It is a fascinating structure way out in the woods a Renaissance masterpiece that fell into disrepair but was carefully restored after WW2 It contains some suburb Aubasson tapestries and fine furniture and several fireplaces that are carved with exceptional beauty.

Going a little way east from Verteillac just over the Charente border is Aubeterre sur Dronne Its charming narrow streets wind through white stone houses and ancient buildings. Built in the shape of an amphitheatre this former stronghold is classified as one of France’s prettiest villages. The most outstanding and impressive monument in Aubeterrre is the underground church of St John. Carved entirely out of rock the main naïve reaches a height of 20 m.

There is fishing and beaches at La Jemaye (14kms) La Jemaye is a large lake with sandy beaches, pedaloes, canoes, horse riding, picnic areas, a cafe etc. The above is just a few of the many attractions in the area. Come and see!!

Verteillac / Vendoire area

The nearest village is Vendoire which has a good restaurant. Villeboise Lavalette is the nearest large village it has a post office, pharmacy, a SuperU and bar/restaurant. At Bertric Buree just a little further is a delightful fish restaurant.

Excellent supermarket - Leclerc - in Riberac, 25 mins away. Verteillac, 15 mins away, also has an excellent bakery, large general store, Bank and cash machine and delightful cafes. Be sure to pay a visit to the Cafe du Commerce - serving the best 'Croque Monsieur' we have ever tasted. Bar le Calice serves a very good plat du jour Mon - Fri ( about €7)as well as a selection of other dishes.

There is also a bank and a cash machine. At Lisle, about 10 mins away, you will find a few small shops and bars and there is usually a Tuesday morning market selling a variety of fresh produce. Lisle also has a doctor and a pharmacy. Many places of interest are a short distance away and full details and pictures

There is also an excellent Information Folder in the house covering Safety Procedures, ideas for eating out, supermarkets, market days and places to visit.

There is a golf course at Pillac about 8 klms away. If you a real professional you need to go to Perigueux about30 klms away – 2 first class 18 hole courses.
