The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
Within easy reach of Bouteilles there is a number of interesting places which will delight you. The town of Nontron is some 15 miles north and is set among attractive lakes that provide ideal picnic sites. It stands high up on a rock fortified by massive ramparts and has a picturesque 18th century chateau. This is a perfect place for children as it houses a lively museum of dolls, models, games and toys.
A short drive from Bouteilles there is the delightful medieval town of Brantome where it is a delight to walk around the remarkable and ancient abbey founded by Charlemagne (742-814). With its soaring campanile this is one of the most elegant medieval and Renaissance buildings in the Dordogne, complete with caves used by the monks as kitchens and cellars. The town sits on a bend of the river Dronne and a stroll along the riverside is an unforgettable experience. Loads of brilliant restaurants complete the experience – you will come back. There are also boats trips available.
About 10 km down the river you come to the pretty village of Bourdeilles where there are two chateaux of different periods built on a fortified hill – a medieval fortress (13th – 14th century) and a Renaissance palace (16th) with a remarkable collection of furniture. On the river Dronne you can rent a canoe Going a little way east from Bouteille just over the Charente border is Aubeterre sur Dronne Its charming narrow streets wind through white stone houses and ancient buildings. Built in the shape of an amphitheatre this former stronghold is classified as one of France’s prettiest villages. The most outstanding and impressive monument in Aubeterrre is the underground church of St John
Not very far away is the town of Grottes de Villars and a short distance north of the town are the caves with some impressive stalactites and paintings more than 17,000 years old. It was discovered in 1953 and is the largest underground network in the Perigord.
Nearby is the Chateau de Puyguilhem in a village of the same name. It is a fascinating structure way out in the woods a Renaissance masterpiece that fell into disrepair but was carefully restored after WW2 It contains some suburb Aubasson tapestries and fine furniture and several fireplaces that are carved with exceptional beauty.
And so it goes on - I just wish I had room to tell you more - come and find out for yourselves!
Verteillac / Bouteilles St Sebastien area
Within 2 klms at the village of Lusignac there is a pleasant outdoor café. Just a little further on about 7 klms at Bertric-Burre there is a superb restaurant specialising in fish
Excellent supermarket - Leclerc - in Riberac, 25 mins away. Verteillac, 15 mins away, also has an excellent bakery, large general store, Bank and cash machine and delightful cafes. Be sure to pay a visit to the Cafe du Commerce - serving the best 'Croque Monsieur' we have ever tasted. Bar le Calice serves a very good plat du jour Mon - Fri ( about €7)as well as a selection of other dishes. There is also a bank and a cash machine. At Lisle, about 10 mins away, you will find a few small shops and bars and there is usually a Tuesday morning market selling a variety of fresh produce. Lisle also has a doctor and a pharmacy. Many places of interest are a short distance away and full details and pictures
There is also an excellent Information Folder in the house covering Safety Procedures, ideas for eating out, supermarkets, market days and places to visit. There is a golf course at Pillac about 8 klms away. If you a real professional you need to go to Perigueux about30 klms away –a first class 18 hole course.
How to get there
Low cost flights available. Both Ryan Air and Flybe come into Bergerac which is the nearest airports - 65km (1 hr drive approx), Limoges 105km (1 hr 50 mins drive approx), Bordeaux 92km (1.5 hours drive approx). We are led to believe that Ryan Air will be flying into Angouleme starting in Spring 2008. This will be nearer about 50 klms.
The distance from Calais is 760kms and takes about 8 hours. (Boulogne-Rouen-Le Mans-Poitiers- Angouleme). There are a number of alternative ferry companies. We have found Sea France to be very competitive. If you are prepared for a little longer drive you can use Norfolk line to Dunkirk instead of Calais. This is about 45 kms additional but if you decide to come through Paris this is no disadvantage.
Nearest ferry port Saint Malo 515km Calais about 760 klms. Nearest railway station Angouleme 50km. Nearest Autoroute junctions Montpon and Mussidan.

Guestbook for Le Petit Manoir
On behalf of the family I would like to thank you for the use of Le Petite Manoir during the second week in July. We had a really enjoyable time in a beautiful and tranquil setting. Le Petit Manoir was perfect in every respect. As well as relaxing there we travelled fairly widely across the region, we even canoed on the Dronne Jim Richardson
Reg, many thanks for the use of your splendid villa, we enjoyed our two weeks very much and would like to take the oppertunity to say thankyou very much, the boys,Sharron and myself had a great time. I hope everything in the villa was left to your satisfaction, and might i say the surrounding areas as you mentioned were not a dissapiontment it was breath taking. Again many thanks John & Sharron
