The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
The Dordogne has a micro climate to suit almost everyone-warm and sunny with the benefit of atlantic breezes to clear air (2200 sunshine hours per year wich make the region similar to the mediterranean)
The mix of landscapes that make up the Dordogne offer something for everyone. Forests meadows, rugged limestone plateaux, vineyards.
Perigueux is the capital. The city sits on the site of ancient vesunna. Cathedral Saint Front has a magnificient 17 th century baroque altarpiece. In summer organ recitals are given on the 1869 organ.
A short drive from Verteillac there is the medieval town of Brantome where it is a delight to walk around the remarkable and ancient abbey founded by Charlemagne (742-814). With its soaring campanile this is one of the most elegant medieval and Renaissance buildings in the Dordogne, complete with caves used by the monks as kitchens and cellars. The town sits on a bend of the river Dronne and a stroll along the riverside is an unforgettable experience and there are also boat trips and canoes available. Loads of brilliant restaurants complete the experience .
About 10 km down the river you come to the pretty village of Bourdeilles where there are two chateaux of different periods built on a fortified hill – a medieval fortress (13th – 14th century) and a Renaissance palace (16th) with a remarkable collection of furniture.
In Aubeterre sur Dronne its charming narrow streets wind through white stone houses and ancient buildings. Built in the shape of an amphitheatre this former stronghold is classified as one of France’s prettiest villages. The most outstanding & impressive monument in Aubeterre is the underground church of St John.
Not very far away is the town of Grottes de Villars and a short distance north of the town are the caves with some impressive stalactites and paintings more than 17,000 years old. Nearby is the Chateau de Puyguilhem in a village of the same name. It is a fascinating structure way out in the woods a Renaissance masterpiece that fell into disrepair but was carefully restored after WW2. It contains some suburb Aubusson tapestries and fine furniture and several fireplaces that are carved with exceptional beauty.
The Verteillac area
Verteillac is a picturesque village with history in its building, its church or ordinary houses. The village has an excellent bakery, butcher, post office, large general store, bank with cash machine and delightful cafes, tennis courts, and horse riding.
Just a short distance from Verteillac is the town of Riberac renowned for its friday market also known as "little england". and canoes.
There is fishing and beaches at La Jemmaye (20 km). La jemmaye is a large lake with sandy beaches, pedaloes, cafes.

Perfect - beautiful house, lovely garden, blissful silence, gem of a pool. All set two minutes walk from the village square, with shops and restaurants for everything you need, including the best... more Response: Hi, Thank you very much for your evaluation of our gite. Had a very enjoyable week at Ortillac, really good location as quiet but still close to village centre. Property itself is excellent, with a particularly good pool and outside space. Only change I would make would be to turn the dining area downstairs into a combined dining area and sitting room as having the TV on the landing outside one of the bedrooms is not ideal. Overall very happy though and pleased to report that our deposit was repaid very promptly via wire transfer as promised. Response: Hi, Thank you very much for your evaluation of our gite.
