La Borie is a lovely old farmhouse with enormous rooms, high ceilings and lots of character. It feels grand, but comfortable and lived in. We've tried to preserve the charm that our family fell in love with when we bought it 25 years ago, while providing all the modern facilities that people expect today. We've taken a personal interest in the furnishings and decor. There is an interesting mix of old and new, paintings by friends and family, and brocante collected over the years. It is in a small hamlet, just outside the beautiful village of Lusignac.

The house suits 2 families sharing, an extended family of several generations or groups of friends. But, it also appeals to smaller groups who appreciate the luxury of space and tranquility.

The house is set in large grounds, comprising a courtyard with terrace, garden and lawn near the house, with steps leading down to the fenced swimming pool, orchard and field. There is an open table tennis barn, and plenty of space for badminton and boulesl. The 13m pool has a diving board, and a shallow section ideal for little ones to learn to swim. There are lots of sun-lounges, umbrellas and a solar shower. The field has wonderful wild orchids in the spring, and I love to cut paths through the grass for playing hide and seek. There is so much to do about the house, that many visitors never leave the property apart from the odd visit to one of the numerous markets or restaurants nearby.

I live next door, so am available to answer questions or have a chat, and to care for the pool and grounds.

The Dordogne region

The Dordogne region is well known for its beautiful countryside and charming villages and towns. There are countless chateaux, big and small, romanesque churches and bustling markets. Lots to see and do.

The Dordogne Valley is spectacular, and well worth a day trip. I love to look at the hilltop castles and medieval villages as I canoe down the River. But there are also the prehistoric caves at Lascaux and Les Eyzies, the wonderful medieval town of Sarlat, and a couple of amazing gardens to explore as well, depending on your interests or staying power.

Perigueux and Bergerac are both well worth a visit on market day. And Perigueux has a great Festival of Mime in August.

There are the vineyards of Bergerac and St Emillion, which are fun to visit for a wine tasting, and perhaps choose a few bottles to take home.

Then there is Bordeaux, a very fine city, and beyond, Arcachon or Cap Ferret for a dip in the sea, and maybe some seafood.

The countryside around Verteillac is largely gently rolling hills with fields of sunflowers and maize. Picture postcard in August. Very rural and ideal for walking or cycling. Some say, like the best of the UK without the cars. Our village of Lusignac is one of the prettiest in the area, with its little chateau, medieval church and popular bar restaurant. Verteillac is bigger and has the boulangerie, several bars and restaurants, Merlaud(where you can buy anything) and a great brocante on the first Sunday in the month. Riberac with it's bustling Friday market is the place to buy the specialities of the area, a few gifts to take home and to sip a coffee while watching the world go by.

The beaches at Aubeterre or Lake Jemaye are ideal outings for the children, to get their hands in some sand and rub shoulders with the locals. While a stroll around Brantome or Aubeterre followed by a drink or bite to eat in one of the restaurants is enough to satisfy most adults.

For the sports enthusiasts, canoeing, cycling, tennis, golf and horse riding are all popular in the area.
