The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

Within easy reach of Verteillac & La Tour Blanche there are many interesting places to visit. The town of Nontron is some 20 km north and is set among attractive lakes that provide ideal picnic sites. It stands high up on a rock fortified by massive ramparts and has a fine 18th C. Château. This is equally a good visit for children as it houses a museum of dolls, models, games & toys.

The medieval town of Brantôme is a fascinating & picturesque visit, with it's remarkable ancient abbey founded by Charlemagne (742-814). The town sits on a bend of the river Dronne and a stroll along the riverside is an unforgettable experience. There are several good restaurants & boats trips available.

The delightful village of Bourdeilles has two Châteaux of different periods built on a fortified hill – a medieval fortress (13th – 14th C.) and a Renaissance palace (16th C.)

On the river Dronne you can rent a canoe & visit the imposing overhang of the natural fortification.

Just a short distance away is the town of Riberac, well known for its Friday market – the best in the area and well worth a visit.

The Grottes (Caves) de Villars contains some impressive stalactites and paintings more than 17,000 years old. It was discovered in 1953 & is the largest underground network in the Perigord. The underground river has hollowed out huge chambers connected to each other by galleries.

Near to Villars is the Château de Puyguilhem. This is a fascinating Renaissance masterpiece that fell into disrepair after the revolution but was carefully restored during the 50s. It contains some fine Aubusson tapestries & several fireplaces that are carved with exceptional beauty.

Going a little way east from Verteillac just over the Charente border is Aubeterre sur Dronne. Its charming narrow streets wind through white stone houses & ancient buildings. Built in the shape of an amphitheatre this former stronghold is classified as one of France’s prettiest villages. The most outstanding and impressive monument in Aubeterrre is the underground church of St John, carved entirely out of rock, the main nave reaches a height of 20 m.

There is fishing & beaches at La Jemaye (14 km), a large lake with sandy beaches, pedaloes, canoes, horse riding, picnic areas & a café.

Verteillac

Verteillac, 3 km away, has an excellent bakery, butcher, post office, hairdresser, large general store, bank, ATM & several cafés. Bar le Calice serves a very good plat du jour.

Ribérac is about 20 mins away & has a lively square with bars, cafes & restaurants.

In La Tour Blanche you will find an excellent baker, butcher, general store, pharmacy, post office, tabac/bar & the Chez Fernand bar/restaurant (excellent fixed priced set menu Mon - Fri lunchtimes).

At Lisle, about 20 mins away, you will find a few small shops & bars. There is a Tuesday morning market selling a variety of fresh produce. Lisle also has a doctor & a pharmacy.

There is also an excellent Information Folder in the house covering ideas for eating out, supermarkets, market days & places to visit.

"Fantastic summer holiday!"

After many hours of searching on the internet for a suitable property, we finally settled on Domaine de Bernevy and we weren't disappointed! As soon as we arrived, we were charmed by the age and … More

"Perfect peace"

We had the most fantastic stay. We travelled down after a week further north and had arranged to meet with good friends and all of our children. The setting is breathtaking, everything was clean and tidy, great advice on where to visit from Bernard, the owner. The pool and grounds were so well manicured and maintained that we spent a lot of time exploring them rather than going out! Wonderful memories of a fabulous stay. Thanks to Bernard for the home made fig jam too!

"facilities /no wi fi"

beautiful place and grounds and charming owners- only grumble is advertised as 'wifi' being available - which was very important as group of 7 and all needed access for varying reasons. However no wifi or internet available had to go to Verteillac to cafe to access.
At the time my father was ill in the Uk and needed to book flights and car hire to get there, had to go early into the town to try and book everything on the day I needed to leave

The owners are glad this party appreciated "the beauty of the place and grounds" - and that they found the owners charming. They regret that the wifi could not be made to work in the gîte due to the thickness of the ancient walls. However, they did invite the party to use their facilities in the big house and did everything they could to make their stay as pleasant as possible. They appreciate that it was a troubled time for these visitors.
