Chez Itout
About the home
Chez Itout nestles peacefully in the Perigord Blanc region of the Dordogne. This tastefully converted barn provides 3-bedroom accommodation with spacious, light and airy rooms.
Built of local stone, the house retains the charm and character of the original building but is equipped with the modern amenities that make for an enjoyable holiday. The large, high-beamed open-plan living room is cool and welcoming in summer, with a separate dining area and pretty, pale green kitchen. Relax with a book in a quiet corner here, or enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace, where there is a barbecue and lovely open views over the pool and the countryside beyond. On a cooler evening you'll find a quiet corner to sit and read, or watch TV, by the log burner; perhaps while the children watch a DVD in their own area nearby. All the accommodation is on the ground floor and this, with the fenced-in swimming pool in the pretty enclosed garden, makes the house perfect for children.
This is a beautiful home to which we are happy to welcome you.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

The Aquitaine climate is mild and the region enjoys 2,200 sunshine hours per year. Along with rainfall that is well distributed over the year, this sunshine is one of the elements which favour sunflowers and wine production in Aquitaine.
A short drive from Cherval is the medieval town of Brantome where it is a delight to walk around the remarkable and ancient abbey founded by Charlemagne (742-814). With its soaring campanile this is one of the most elegant medieval and Renaissance buildings in the Dordogne, complete with caves used by the monks as kitchens and cellars. The town, known as the Venice of the Perigord, sits on a bend of the river Dronne and a stroll along the riverside is an unforgettable experience. Enjoy a boat trip up the river or hire a canoe and paddle around the town. There are many excellent restaurants and riverside cafes from which to watch the world drift by.
About 10 km down the river you come to the pretty village of Bourdeilles where there are two chateaux of different periods built on a fortified hill – a medieval fortress (13th – 14th century) and a Renaissance palace (16th) with a remarkable collection of furniture. On the river Dronne you can rent a canoe.
Just a short distance away there is the lively town of Riberac which is renowned for its Friday market – the best in the area and well worth a visit.
Not very far away is the town of Villars and a short distance north of the town are the caves with some impressive stalactites and paintings more than 17,000 years old. It was discovered in 1953 and is the largest underground network in the Perigord. The underground river has hollowed out huge chambers connected to each other by galleries.
Nearby is the Chateau de Puyguilhem in a village of the same name. It is a fascinating structure way out in the woods. A Renaissance masterpiece that fell into disrepair but was carefully restored after WW2. It contains some superb Aubusson tapestries and fine furniture and several fireplaces that are carved with exceptional beauty.
Going a little way east from Verteillac just over the Charente border is Aubeterre sur Dronne. Its charming narrow streets wind through white stone houses and ancient buildings. Built in the shape of an amphitheatre this former stronghold is classified as one of France’s prettiest villages. The most outstanding and impressive monument in Aubeterre is the underground church of St John. Carved entirely out of rock the main nave reaches a height of 20 m.
There is fishing and beaches at La Jemaye, south of Riberac. La Jemaye is a large lake with sandy beaches, pedaloes, canoes, horse riding, picnic areas, cafes and good play areas for children.
The above are just a few of the many attractions in the area. Come and see!!
The Verteillac / Cherval area
Cherval is within walking distance and is a delightful village with a bar, cafe and bakers shop as well as one of the best car repair places in the area.
Verteillac,10 mins away, has a real buzz. There is an excellent bakery, large general store, bank with cash machine, lively cafes and several good restaurants, a post office and a hairdresser. There is also a medical centre with an English-speaking doctor, and a dentist.
Riberac is about 20 mins away and has a lively square with many bars, cafes and restaurants. The large Friday market is great fun and where you'll find the freshest fruit and vegetables, as well as Provencal tablecloths and local handpainted pottery. Don't forget to check out the stalls in the side streets as well. Excellent supermarkets in Riberac.
In La Tour Blanche you will find a baker, butcher, general store, pharmacy, Post Office, tabac/bar and the Chez Fernand bar/restaurant (good value fixed price set menu Mon - Fri lunchtimes). .
At Lisle, about 20 mins away, you will find a few small shops and bars and there is usually a Tuesday morning market selling a variety of fresh produce. Lisle also has a doctor and a pharmacy.
There is a golf course at Pillac about 8 kms away. If you are real professional you need to go to Perigueux about 30 kms away – 2 first class 18 hole courses.
There are so many festivals during the summer it is not possible to mention them all. Every village has some activity - snail eating, bread festival etc
There is also an excellent Information folder in the house covering ideas for eating out, supermarkets, market days and places to visit

Guestbook for Chez Itout
Very good owners who made every effort to make us welcome including nice touches such as leaving milk, butter, bread and wine ready for us on arrival. Also a full range of cleaning materials, etc. The property is a beautifully spacious barn conversion. June 2009.
A beautiful relaxing area. The owners were lovely, they looked after us well. The French were helpful and nice. Sept 2009.
Yet another wonderful stay in Chez Itout - this is our 4th holiday here and we have again enjoyed the house, cooling down in the pool and visiting this beautiful region. See you again next year! (Family T., St Albans, Aug 2010) .
