Le Chiat is a restored and extended stone barn; part of a pretty hamlet amongst chestnut and pine woodland, in the spectacular Parc Naturel Régional des Monts d'Ardèche. The south facing garden enjoys all day sunshine and has beautiful unspoilt views across the valley. Ideal for family holidays and outdoor activities, or if you just want to get away from it all.
We are only 15 minutes drive from the popular Eyrieux Valley where there is camping, and beaches for river swimming, canoeing and other watersports.
Le Chiat is a split level house and has 3 floors. The lower entrance is down a few stone steps into an open plan living, kitchen and dining area with high ceilings, a contemporary fitted kitchen with breakfast bar, and a log burner.
The connecting old barn - comprising bedrooms, games room and bathroom - is reached either via the mezzanine or up a couple of steps from road level.
Families with small children should be aware that the staircase up to the mezzanine is open plan. On this level there is: A large tiled 'games room' with ping-pong table, and two double bedrooms. From the games room there is a new oak staircase to the top of the house with one triple bedroom and a very large 'L shaped' room, with a double and single bed.
The main bathroom (with over bath shower and WC) is located in the old barn part of the house next to the ground floor bedrooms. An additonal separate WC is located adjacent to the main living area.
There is a covered patio outside with large table and lighting for Summer evening dining. There are also sun loungers for relaxation - it's a great place to sit and read.
Le Chiat is at the end of a cul de sac with very little traffic, and there is ample parking.
We lived in the house with our young children for a sabbatical year, so it's very well equipped.

The Rhône-Alpes region
The climate in Ardeche is hot in summer and mild in spring/autumn. Le Chiat is situated in a forested area (mainly chestnut and pine) and in autumn the golden colours of the trees are quite spectacular, as well as being a good time to collect chestnuts.
Le Chiat is situated in the commune of Silhac in the Parc Regional de Monts d'Ardeche, at an altitude of 600m. We are about 30km west of Valence, which is a small but chic city in the Rhone valley on the main A7 Autoroute.
The nearest boulangerie (bakery) is at Chalencon, a pretty hillside village about 5 minutes drive away, where there are also two restaurants and a cafe tabac.
The nearest town is Vernoux en Vivarais, about 15 minutes drive, which has a large supermarket, a selection of shops and several restaurants. Vernoux also has a municipal swimming pool with outdoor water slide and sunbathing area, and a swimming lake (with lifeguard in the summer).
If you like walking, the opportunities in Ardèche are endless and there is a Grande Randonnee (national walking trail), which passes through the forest 200m from our house.
For horse riding, there are stables only 5 minutes away at Sarnoux, where Jean Daniel will gladly take guided tours with parties of all abilities.
There are several nearby locations for river swimming, the best being at St Sauveur de Montagut and les Ollieres in the Eyrieux Valley, or more locally at the Duniere gorge.
At les Ollieres you can also hire canoes or go to the Aquarock adventure park.
This is a popular area for cycling - both on road and MTB, but you need to be reasonably fit as it is quite hilly!
In late summer/autumn mushroom picking is a favorite activity for the locals - but be careful as they're not all edible. Chanterelles are particularly abundant and sometimes ceps. In October you can pick up more chestnuts than you can carry.
The local Market is at Vernoux every Thursday morning, where there is a wide selection of local produce and cheeses.

"A beautiful home in paradise!"
We spent the first week in August in this beautiful house, and from the moment we arrived we could not have been happier. Everything is set up for you to relax and enjoy. The garden and seating area is lovely, made even better by the brilliant sunshine and sometimes a bit to hot 37 degrees we had on some days! With stunning views, the house is in a peaceful location along with 3-4 other properties quite close by but they don't impact on your stay if you want to keep yourselves to yourselves, perfect for relaxing and getting away from it all. The mini Gorge a 10 minute drive away is a must, although a little tricky to walk down to – it’s well worth it, swimming and canyoning up the river was one of the best experiences of our holiday. A beautiful 25 minute drive takes you to the very reasonably priced Canoe hire and Aqua rock, where the whole family really enjoyed themselves. A fantastic holiday, thanks Jeff and Lyne for your excellent communication throughout and welcoming us your beautiful home in paradise.

"Tranquility and beauty"
" Tranquility and beauty " What a fabulous place to relax and escape from busy 21st century life in the heart of the French countryside! Vernoux-en-Vivarais is in an extremely quiet rural area of The Ardeche and as soon as you arrive you cannot help but unwind and enjoy the simple pleasures of a comfortable home with a beautiful view. Le Chiat is a small hamlet with a handful of properties which are all in a typical French farmhouse style as is this property. The house has been very thoughtfully furnished and decorated so that it remains traditional but with a modern contemporary twist. The open plan aspect works well so there is plenty of room for both small and large groups. It is well equipped and maintained with everything that you need for your stay. The bedrooms are well presented and tasteful and there is both a modern bathroom and kitchen. One of the best features is the hand crafted wooden outdoor dining table which enjoys an amazing view of the valley and is a perfect place to spend long and lazy mealtimes. There is also a large garden with sun loungers providing plenty of privacy. The games room is a useful extra additional feature particularly if you have children with you. Overall this is the perfect location to chill and recharge. There are delightful walks and areas to cycle from your doorstep and whilst being in a rural setting, it is not too far from Vernoux where you can pick up all your supplies.

"A great find."
Le Chiat is rural retreat with beautiful views along the valley. We enjoyed some fabulous days out; to the nearby local gorge to swim (20 minutes), to the river at St Sauveur de Montagut (45 minutes) where the kids swam and played with their dinghy; horse-riding at the local stables only 10 minutes away and although a long day, down to the stunningly beautiful Ardeche Gorge where you can canoe. That said Le Chiat is a great spot to hang out and enjoy the wonders of the countryside as you are right in it. The local town of Vernoux is 20 mins away where you can get everything you need and it has a weekly market which we enjoyed too.
