We have found no need for air conditioning/fans - the thick walls keep the apartment cool even in July/August.

There are radiators in each room for the winter period.

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Vernet-les-Bains is located 2,000 feet up the slopes of Canigou, one of the highest mountains in the French Pyrenees. The area offers a variety of activities including walking, horse riding and skiing. It also has numerous attractions such as prehistoric caves, thermal baths, the 'Little Yellow Train' taking people up to the ski resorts and mountain walks and Villefranche-de-Conflent, a fortified town with great artisan shops.

As the official French Tourist Board site quotes about Langeudoc, the area offers :

"Miles of fine sandy beaches, a hinterland rising up the foothills of the Pyrenees. It is a land full of character, stretched out under almost permanent sunshine".

The area shares a border with Spain and is strongly Catalan in culture, albeit with a French influence. The Mediterranean coastline comprises long sandy beaches and large lagoons, providing a wide range of water sports, as well as flocks of flamingos!

On average, the area enjoys 300 days of sunshine a year. On the wide plains leading down to the sea, a variety of fruit and vegetables are grown, including vines (Fitou, Corbieres, Minervois etc), peaches and apples.

Vernet les Bains

Vernet-Les-Bains is a beautiful village described by Rudyard Kipling as 'the paradise of the Pyrenees'. It is an ideal base for walking holidays in the mountains surrounding the village. There are also several indoor and outdoor thermal baths and swimming pools in the village, and you can reach the beach or ski resorts within an hour by car.

There are many events and attractions during the summer held in the village square, including Catalan music, dancing and wine tasting.

"The apartment was situated perfectly in the town for all amenaties"

Everything you needed the apartment had to make your holiday enjoyable. In the morning you had the sun on the balcony so you could sit and have breakfast and do a bit of sunbathing if you wanted. It had restaurants, bars a few shops for essensials and nice walks. Villefranche de Conflent is a must so are the caves. Font Romeu was worth a trip and you could go on the little Yellow Train which we will do next time. You can travel to the coast and into Spain which we did or Andorra but not in the summer holiday, its very busy. There are lots of interesting places to visit and a perfect spot to do it from.

"Lovely little place in great location"

We stayed for 13 nights on honeymoon and were not disappointed. It's in a fantastic location for exploring this part of France (car definitely needed!). Vernet les Bains has some excellent walks and is a charming little village.
The apartment itself is spotlessly clean and very well equipped. The owners had even left us a bottle of bubbly and flowers as it was our honeymoon which was a lovely touch. There is no air con but is fairly cool in the heat and you can pull down the shutters during the day. Very good value for money all round!

"Good value, well-situated property in lovely village"

My husband and I needed somewhere to stay to visit family without paying over the odds. This is the fourth time we have come to Vernet so know the area quite well and this property enabled us to leave our car in a quiet car park and walk to wherever we needed in the village.

The property is comfortable and quiet, though we found the lights from the Princess Hotel next door a little irritating at night and had to have the security shutters down but this may be because we are used to more darkness at home. Cooking facilities are a little basic (a two-ring hob and a mini grill/oven) but as I didn't intend making three-course meals this didn't worry me. The view from the balcony is lovely and it made a great place to have breakfast especially as the weather was beautiful.

This was a good reasonable getaway for a couple wanting to stay in Vernet; I would definitely consider booking it again.

The 'security shutters' in the bedroom are standard shutters that most French properties in the area have. They are intended to be used to shut out light at night and are easy to roll up and down when required.

"Great Location to explore from"

We wanted somewhere as a base to explore the local Pyrenees as keen mountain hikers. This apartment is very centrally located so local bakery etc are just a short stroll away and made a very comfortable base with good facilities for self catering. The price represents very good value and matched our expectations.
There are a wealth of walks to explore right on your doorstep with Le Canigou a spectacular backdrop to all the scenery. If you like to get out amongst nature this is a great place to do it.

"Affordable property in idyllic location"

We stayed here for one week in September 2012. The location of Vernet Les Bains is ideal for walking in the foothills of the Pyrenees, scenic drives in France, northern Spain and Andorra and the surrounding areas also offer a wide range of activities for all ages. The property itself is perfect for an affordable trip and has all the facilities one would need for a to comfortable self-catered holiday. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone wishing to explore this area of south-west France. Simon & Charlotte, London

"Peaceful, central, home from home"

I loved this apartment, it had a lovely feel about it and was a real "home from home". Owned by a lovely English couple and looked after by a lovely English lady locally, it is situated in the beautiful village of Vernet les Bains, situated under one of the largest mountains in the Pyrenees, Le Canigou. It's a peaceful location with a quirky village clock that has a delightful chime and a charming will of its own and the apartment is situated very centrally, just 2 minutes walk into the main La Place (square) where the Tourist Office can be found. There are a couple of cafes and restaurants locally, a local newsagent that sells English newspapers, a grocery shop, a bakery, an electrical shop and some other small boutiques and a nearby larger supermarket. There is also a market on Saturdays and Mondays that sells fresh fish and veg as well as other items.

The apartment is tastefully furnished and comfortable. It has a small kitchenette with all the cooking utensils and facilities you need, a lovely balcony, a large lounge with a sofa bed and a separate bedroom that is comfortable. The owners have thought about everything you need. It does get hot in August so I would recommend buying a fan out there or keeping the shutters down all day to keep the flat cool.

The apartment block itself is clean and the residents friendly and surprisingly very quiet. The town itself is also quiet and the locals very friendly. I played Petanque nearby with some local French and the atmosphere was lovely.

There is a newly refurbished swimming complex in Vernet with a fun slide for families and lots of nearby walks. There is a Petanque area and a delightful park with a lake situated near the Casino which was built around the time of Rudyard Kipling's stay at Vernet.

Although there is a regular bus service to and from Vernet les Bains and the fantastic spa facilities there, I would say that a car is necessary to really explore the area as there are so many wonderful things to see and the apartment is ideally situated, with its own car parking space, to allow you to do that.

I will definitely book this apartment again and have recommended it to my friends and family. It's a little gem at a very reasonable price in a peaceful and quiet setting. Ideal for ski trips and walking holidays. Nearby airports include Perpignan (Flybe) (1 hour drive), Carcassonne (Ryanair) (2 hour drive) and Girona, Spain (Ryanair) (1.45 hr drive).
