Home description

The apartment is situated in the oldest part of the town, a 5 minute stroll from the town square. The view from the balcony is exceptional all year round.
The apartment sleeps up to 4 adults; there is a double bedroom, a double sofa bed in the living room and a children's bunk bed in a room downstairs near the garage - this is suitable for 12 years and over.
This is an ideal place to simply relax or to have a more active break. There is an abundance of walks nearby without needing to use a car.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

A beautiful area of France awaits your discovery.
There are many activities in this area, you can explore the magnificent mountains, go horse riding or skiing. There are also many thermal baths and spas.
The Pyrenees Orientales is home to some of the greatest painters and sculptors. The modern art museums of Céret, Collioure and Perpignan have exhibitions throughout the year.
The Yellow Train runs all year round from Villefranche-de-Conflent to Latour-de-Carol ( near Cerdagne, near the Spanish frontier and Andorra.) The train winds its way through awe inspiring landscapes and crosses some breathtaking bridges. the pink blossom of the peach and apricot orchards create a beautiful scene with snow topped Canigou above.
There are many Music , Dance and Theatre festivals throughout the summer. For example:
The Jazz festival in the gardens of the Palace of the King of Majorca in Perpignan and the Pablo Casals festival in Prades.
The bonfires of St John's Eve illuminate Canigou and there is the annual run to the peak from Vernet in August.
The " Sardane" is the traditional catalan dance which can be seen performed in the market square of Vernet during festivals and celebrations.
The region is also well known for the wines. Under the registered names of " Cotes du Roussillon", " Cotes du Roussillon Villages" or " Collioure" numerous red, white and rose wines abound. Muscat is one of the naturally sweet white wines from this region.
There are four major sites listed as World Heritage for Humanity by UNESCO;
* The Canal du Midi
* The Routes of Santiago de Compostela
* The Pont du Gard
* The city of Carcassone.
The Pyrenees Orientales has eleven nature reserves open to the public.

Vernet les Bains area

Vernet-les Bains is a charming old town with a fascinating old quarter, around an ancient hill top church. there are lovely parks with abundant flowers lining the river and wonderful opportunities for walking in the Pyrenees. Situated 2000 feet up Mount Canigou one of the highest mountains in the Pyrenees.
Vernet is also home to a thermal spa which was visited by the fashionable at the turn of the last century and some of the most famous visitors include Rudyard Kipling and the Pasha of Egypt.

Villefranche-de-Conflent is a short 10 minute drive from the apartment, on the main road to Andorra. It is a small walled town in the Pyrénées-Orientales département, southwestern France.
The town is tightly packed within the original castle walls and is bounded on one side by the road running up into the Cerdagne and on the other by the Conflent.
It is well known as the starting point for the Yellow train which will take you to the ski resorts and mountain walks.

How to get there

Flights to Girona ( Spain) or Perpignan ( France).
Car Hire is available and journey from Perpignan is 40 minutes and 1 1/2 hours from Girona, and 2 1/2 hours from Barcelona.
There is a bus from Perpignan airport to the train station in Perpignan. From here there are trains to Villefranche-de-Conflent which is a 15 minute bus journey from to Vernet.
There is also a bus service from Perpignan direct to Vernet which is a flat fee of 1 Euro. This runs on average 4 times daily.

The property is tranquil, set back from a small road which leads up to the old part of the town and church. It is surrounded by trees and we have our own garden with a small culvert running through it. In winter within minutes the apartment is warm due to the highly efficient central heating. At all times of the year due to the regular sunshine we eat out on the balcony watching the lovely view of Canigou.

Conditions

20% of the total cost paid to reserve the booking, with the rest paid 6 weeks prior to the stay. For each booking we charge £70 to cover the cost of cleaning, change of linen and towels, regardless of length of stay.
