Enquire nowThe Loire Valley / Maine-et-Loire region
Of great historical interest .French/English at war, Joan of Arc etc. The vally is studded with magnificent chateaux palaces and castle.
The Loire is acknowledged as France's last truly wild river . No longer navigable by larger shipping, it is full of sandbanks and wildlife.
Fine wines are made along its banks and Saumur in particular is fmed for its spaarkling white wine. Many of the villages are made from tuffeau, this being local limestone, very pale and soft, which lends an attractive pale golden glow to many of the villages. of htis area.
The Vernantes / Mouliherne area
Linieres Bouton is a tiny hamlet with a very beautiful chateau now open as a B and B. The hamlet's residents include an artist , a wood sculptor ,and one of the (many presumably) great nieces of Napoleon. The butcher's van visits on Fridaysand the baker's on Tues and Fridays.
There is a wonderful restaurant, La Gare, only 500 metres away, open Monday to Friday lunchtimes, with a four course meal and wine for 11euros. Rille is 15 m drive away and has a water sports centre and nature reserve. Mouliherene is 5 m drive away and has river walks, lake with children's play area and fishing.
Good restaurants and shops here too.The Loire is known as the 'Garden of France' thanks to its temperate climate and abundant local produce. Saumur, approx 20 minutes away is a famous château town with spectacular river views, boutiques, restaurants, theatre, bars and historic buildings, as well as a superb market on Saturdays selling local cheeses and fresh vegetables.
Saumur is also home to the national French riding school and the French cavalry who put on spectacular dressage shows throughout the year, for nearly two centuries the cavaliers of the Cadre Noir have been the pride of this city. Major international competitions, of all equestrian pursuits, are regular occurrences in this wonderful place.
The Chateau of Saumur ,15th century home of the Anjou kings, dominates Saumur (from its hilltop setting it really is a fairytale Chateau) Begun by Louis XI in 1246, it is a rare example of 14th century architecture, a style that evolved at the end of the Middle Ages and ushered in the Renaissance. We also have in the region the zoo at Doué La Fontaine and La Fleche , there are also 140 boules clubs in the area for those who want to be with the locals.
The rivers, lakes and forests accommodate those with outdoor interests. There are a wide range of watersports such as fishing, sailing, canoeing and swimming. There are also plenty of paths for cycling, walking and horse riding.
We have at least six first class golf courses in our area. There are public swimming pools at Longué and Saumur where there is also a beach. There are plenty of local lakes for fishing (easy to get a permit in the local tabac) also for swimming, many of which have sandy beaches.

The house had everything we needed and was robust enough for our young kids (3 and 7) . They had more rooms than we needed, which meant that we could play table tennis indoors during the occasional rain shower. There's a lovely old large stone fireplace, which we used occasionally at the end of some cooler evenings. The garden has a large enough lawn area for games with the kids, and also has an area with apple trees to provide dappled shade when it gets hot, which it certainly can do. We also used the small inflatable splash pool - big enough for all of us to sit in, but not enough for the kids to really swim. The house is in a very small hamlet, although we never saw anybody else. The only downside was the occasional car on the small D road nearby, but that was only because it was so quiet otherwise. There's a restaurant 10mins walk away that looks very basic, but does a fantastic fixed price buffet and menu du jour. Other than that everything else is a short drive or cycle away (shops/restaurants/etc...). There are plenty of small towns within 30mins but the main places to explore are on the Loire itself, with the large town of Saumur about 20mins away. There was enough variety to keep us all happy for 2 weeks without having to try too hard to find things to do. Relaxing without being boring. We would go again. |

We really enjoyed our stay at Le Croissant. The house is lovely with lots of character, plenty of space, and everything we needed during our stay. We spent most of our time in the garden. The owner is obviously a sports fan as there is a full-size table tennis table, boules, badminton equipment, etc. After we tired ourselves out it was a pleasure just to lounge around in the sun or dine al fresco. The area is really quiet and a car is needed to get to the nearest towns, but 10 minutes walk up the road is a restaurant serving fantastic rustic french food at bargain prices - a real find! All in all I can highly recommend it. |

If you are looking for a quiet and relaxing holiday close to a major town in the Loire Valley - Saumur - then Le Criossant is the perfect choice. Spacious house with large, well-tended gardens, a little off the beaten track but close enough to typical unspoilt French villages. Peaceful local lanes perfect for cycling or an evening stroll. Owner could not have been more helpful. |
