The Loire Valley / Maine-et-Loire region

The Loire is known as the 'Garden of France' thanks to its temperate climate and abundant local produce. Saumur, approx 20 minutes away is a famous château town with spectacular river views, boutiques, restaurants, theatre, bars and historic buildings, as well as a superb market on Saturdays selling local cheeses and fresh vegetables.

Saumur is also home to the national French riding school and the French cavalry who put on spectacular dressage shows throughout the year, for nearly two centuries the cavaliers of the Cadre Noir have been the pride of this city. Major international competitions, of all equestrian pursuits, are regular occurrences in this wonderful place.

The Chateau of Saumur ,15th century home of the Anjou kings, dominates Saumur (from its hilltop setting it really is a fairytale Chateau) Begun by Louis XI in 1246, it is a rare example of 14th century architecture, a style that evolved at the end of the Middle Ages and ushered in the Renaissance.

Angers
The Maine river flows peacefully at the foot of the imposing Chateau d'Angers, which, together with the towering Cathedral, is the centre of the Old Town and its half-timbered houses. The world most popular liqueur, Cointreau, is produced in Angers. Moreover, Anjou boasts a great number of wine producers offering wine tasting of the delightfully diverse local production.

There are lovely walking streets filled with bistros and boutiques. On a Saturday morning there are markets where you will find everything from local cheeses and all sorts of local delicacies to sample there are items to buy from Parisian shoes , handbags, clothes stunning and artwork. Why not mix country life with chic cities, whilest mingleing with the locals.

Baugé
In the 15th century, Baugé was the favourite residence of Yolande of Aragon, mother of the future King René, who also liked to hold court here. The Château of Baugé, which has an elegant spiral staircase, now houses a museum (featuring china, weapons and old coins) Also on display is the famous Cross of Anjou, a precious relic brought from Constantinople in the 13th century.

Fontevraud
Extending over nearly 37 acres, Fontevraud is the largest group of monastic buildings anywhere in Europe.
Of the five abbeys founded in the 11th century, only three still exist. The English Plantagenet Kings chose Fontevraud as their final resting place and the recumbent figures of Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard the Lionhearted and Isabel of Angoulême can be admired in Abbey Church.

Vernantes / Mouliherne area

We also have in the region the zoo at Doué La Fontaine and La Fleche , there are also 140 boules clubs in the area for those who want to be with the locals.

We have at least six first class golf courses in our area.

There are public swimming pools at Longué and Saumur where there is also a beach. There are plenty of local lakes for fishing (easy to get a permit in the local tabac) also for swimming, many of which have sandy beaches.

Guestbook

"We had such a great time in your beautiful gite. You made us so welcome and it was nice to dip into the life in rural France for a short while. We just loved the house with all its old charm but with your personal touches, a great combination. The local walks were terrific and re-discovering Saumur, and visiting Chaumond for the first time fantastic. We would recommend the drive between Saumur and Angers on the South Bank, very quiet, and totally un spoilt. What a lucky find you were. Best wishes" - Neil and Sally, Witney, Oxon. Sept 07

"We had a lovely holiday, the Loire Valley is beautiful and there is just so much to see and do that we shall have to make a ‘number’ of return trips. We found the people so friendly and the whole way of life such a wonderful escape from the hectic lives we lead at home. Petit Bijou is an enchanting cottage and makes for an idyllic holiday retreat, all your little touches make the whole experience feel extra special and made us feel quite spoilt. We will certainly recommend anyone thinking of a holiday in France to visit the Loire and to stay at Petit Bijou".

"We found Le Petit Bijou just about perfect; modern, cosy and just the ticket for a couple wanting a countryside retreat. We had a great time there. Of note we were well hosted, the local town was within walking distance and the principle house of which this was an annexe. There was chickens and ponies in the paddock. great for children. We visited stupendous chateaux, several wine cellars and a very unique mushroom museum; well recommended".

"Lovely property , very romantic with fire ablaze when we arrived and a lovely welcome pack to meet us after a long journey, well apprecatied. Many thanks, great week".
