The Loire Valley / Maine-et-Loire region
The Loire is known as the 'Garden of France' thanks to its temperate climate and abundant local produce.
Saumur, 20 minutes away is a famous château town with spectacular river views, boutiques, restaurants, theatre, bars and historic buildings, as well as a superb market on Saturdays. It is the home of the national French riding school and the French cavalry who put on spectacular dressage shows throughout the year.
The region is steeped in history and provides many attractions with its museums, abbeys, medieval churches, cathedrals and troglodyte caves - all close by. This was the area of the Plantagenets - Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart are all buried nearby at Fontevraud Abbey. Joan of Arc and Rabelais have links to the château town of Chinon 30kms to the West.
You are ideally placed to visit all the vineyards of the region which produces light reds, white and rosé wines and most famously the Saumur sparkling wines which rival some of the best champagnes and for a fraction of the price.
There are endless options for eating out - you can sample delicious good value food in family run bars and restaurants or dine in luxury at one of the impressive châteaux.
For adults who are really kids at heart there is a fabulous zoo at Doué La Fontaine and there are 140 boules clubs in the area for those who want to hang out with the locals.
The rivers, lakes and forests accommodate those with outdoor interests. There are a wide range of watersports such as fishing, sailing, canoeing and swimming. There are also plenty of paths for cycling, walking and horse riding.
We have at least six first class golf courses in our area.
For those partial to 'retail therapy' there are a multitude of options from local markets and ‘brocantes’ to exclusive boutiques in the historic cities of Tours, Angers and Le Mans.
There are public swimming pools at Longué and Saumur where there is also a beach. There are plenty of local lakes for fishing and swimming, many of which have sandy beaches.
Vernantes area
Vernantes is a historic small town with two churches and a weekly market. There are bars and an excellent local restaurant and shops all within walking distance. There is a large supermarket a km from the property.
Close by are plenty of walks, riding and cycle paths and a lake just 4kms away with a sandy beach for swimming and fishing.
