The Dordogne region
Why come to the Dordogne? Well, the beauty of the region is unsurpassed; rivers cut through limestone, leaving fantastic cliffs people have built around and into for thousands of years. The vast system of caves below the earth hold art so old it's difficult to think that people could have been so talented back then.
The cuisine is one of the best in the world; after all, the Perigord is famous for truffles and foie gras, two of the most sensuous tastes on the planet. You'll find lots of duck and goose cooked in interesting ways, plus the area has many great restaurants to suit all budgets. There are many chateaux in the Dordogne as well, a density similar to the famous Loire castles, just less visited. Wine is very much part of the tradition, wine visits for tastings are very easily arranged. A famous dessert wine is produced at Monbazillac, and many good local red wines are produced around Bergerac.
Situated in a small tranquil hamlet just outside the small village of Beauregard-et-Bassac, half way between the historic towns of Bergerac and Périgueux, and right in the centre of the Dordogne. It is a 5 minute drive to the small town of Vergt that has a traditional weekly outdoor market, and good shopping facilities. Vergt also ensures a wide range of opportunities for sport, leisure and recreation to suit people of all ages and interests. The house is within 30 minutes of the Dordogne River for Canoeing; Golf, Horse Riding, Cycling and walks are all available nearby. Lac de Neuf Font (a fishing and swimming lake) is a 10 min drive for picnics and barbecues, swimming etc and a great place for children with aquatic slides and pedalos for hire. There are also musical evenings at the La Guinguette Restaurant which is alongside the Lake.
