Further details indoors

This is a beautiful apartment with a private entrance on the front part of the cottage, slightly hidden by the corner of a house. In front of the apartment is a small, well placed terrace, from which one has a magnificent view of the Apuan Alps. Inside, a wooden staircase leads upwards. On the right, two steps down, is the dining room with a typical Tuscan fireplace and a bed couch. A balcony divides the kitchen area, including a gas-stove, fridge and oven, and the dining room. Two doors lead away from the kitchen: one to a double bedroom, the other to a bathroom and shower, one step higher. The room has a number of arched windows. This was probably the “METATO” of the house (an ancient Roman term used for a room in which chestnuts were stored and left to dry). Returning to the entrance, the wooden staircase leads up to a room with a double bed and a door to a small bathroom including a sink, toilet and shower. The roof of the room is tilted and about 1 metre high at the lowest point. The room is very welcoming, as is the whole apartment, which is very pleasant and intimate with its abundant use of wood.

The first restaurant , Il Volpino, is 5 mins driving. It's open Friday-Sunday. Other restaurants/pizzeria my guests like are Il Totto in Sassi and Fobbia close to Molazzana both at about 10 minutes driving from Le Capanne.

In Gallicano, 10 Km far, you can find, hypermarket, banks, post office and all you need for your holiday.

The Tuscany region

The rural enclave in northwest Tuscany known as the Garfagnana, has to be one of Italy's best-kept secrets. The Garfagnana is within reach of the Tuscan gems of Lucca, Pisa and Florence, but its appeal lies more in its isolation, its lack of tourism and its striking scenery. This area of outstanding natural beauty and matchless hospitality nestles between two distinct mountain ranges, the spectacular jagged ‘marble mountains’ of the Alpi Apuane and the rolling ‘spine of Italy’, the Apennines.

Vergemoli

You can choose between two way of spending your holiday: to stay relaxed in the peace of the country or do a lot of activities as trekking, mountain bike, excursions in mountain, tours to caves or natural parks.

The local cuisine can be enjoyed at reasonable prices in the numerous restaurants of the area.

A visit to Lucca, the historical, walled main town of the province could be made in half a day.

Recommended full day trips include Pisa and Florence.

"Peaceful mountain hideaway"

Le Capanne exceeded our expectations. This lovely mountain retreat was very comfortable and nice and quiet. We hiked directly from the lodging to a couple of nearby villages, through forests of chestnut trees and across running streams. Our host, David, was very accessible throughout the week to answer our questions and provide suggestions for things to do. He and a friend led us on a hike to a lovely village. That was a real highlight. The grounds were neatly kept and David brought us a fresh supply of firewood every night. I would return next year if I could!

Thank you Nancy! The trip to Trassilico from Le Capanne is really beautiful and it was the first time for me too. I remember you playing the 300 years ald "organo" in the Church! Hope to see you again in the future. David

"Everything I hoped Italy would be!"

Our first trip to Italy and the weather was about as bad as could be. We arrived at Pisa Airport to a tremendous storm and that set the theme for about the next four days. We had one good morning of weather and that was it. However that did not stop us from making the most of things. First off the location of our place was really breathtaking, right up in the mountains and the views were spectacular. Day trips to Florence, Lucca, and Barga each revealed their own riches. Food and wine were absolutely fantastic, and then their was David. A more gracious and giving host you could not wish for, he was simply amazing. It's a pity the weather wasn't kinder to us but otherwise we had a tremendous time. We would like to return again someday.

"a little piece of Paradise"

4of us stayed for 6 days in May. What a wonderful Holiday. David was a great host, who ensured we had everything we needed, leaving us with pastries, breads & a bottle of wine. Very Rustic accomodatio… More
