The Swiss Alps / Valais/Swiss Alps region
Valais, Switzerland sits in the heart of the Swiss Alps and is home to some of the best ski resorts anywhere in the world. Zermatt, Verbier, and Saas-Fee are just a few of the storied ski resorts in the beautiful Alpine valley of Valais. In summer, Valais gives itself over to mountain climbing, challenging hiking, and spas.
The entire Alpine region of Valais is impressive, but perhaps its best-loved sight is the Matterhorn, a horn-shaped peak that provides a dramatic backdrop to valley towns. There are countless other peaks in Valais as well; some 50 of them reach altitudes of 4,000m (13,120 feet) or more. The mountain passes that cut through these mammoth mountains - such as the Great St. Bernard Pass - are some of Valais' best attractions.
Verbier area
For skiing lovers, it doesn't come much better than Verbier. As one of Europe's premier ski resorts orientated towards the intermediate to advanced skier, it attracts hordes of visitors a year - and with over 400 km of piste there is more than enough space on the slopes for them. What it has lost in traditional charm, it has made up for with terrific skiing and plentiful apres ski.
For anyone looking for a break from Verbier's delights, Martigny offers a close-by (27km) cultural alternative. One of Martigny's main attractions is the Pierre Gianadda Foundation, which exhibits a Roman museum that includes a free archaeological tour of a 5000-seat Roman amphitheatre, as well as a classic car museum. 10km from Martigny, towards Lausanne, is the Labyrinthe of Adventures, an interesting and challenging maze. Finally Switzerland's biggest theme park, Happyland, is open from the last Saturday in March to 1 November and can be found on the road between Sion and Sierre.
