The Costa de Almeria region
Located in Spain's southernmost region of Andalucia, the Costa de Almeria has the dual advantages of being as varied and attractive as any of the Spanish costas, and also being pristine and unspoilt in comparison with the Costa del Sol and the Costa Brava. At the eastern edge of the coast, you will find the unique desert landscapes of the Cabo de Gata-Nijar national park. Sparsely populated and rarely visited by tourists, this area retains a "frontier feel" as many of the pristine coves can only be reached on foot. This is an ideal spot for wannabe explorers!
There are fishing villages dotted along the coastline and many an excursion to be enjoyed (details in the apartment). The surrounding villages are picturesque and offer tourist shops and restuarants. There is a very Spanish feel in this area - not the usual 'happy hour' culture!
The climate in this region is superb year round with warm sunny days, even in January and February!
Further west, you will find the tourist resorts of Roquetas de Mar and Aguadulce, popular destinations for package holidays offering all the amenities associated with Spanish holiday resorts. Also worth a visit are the beaches of Vera, the historic hill town of Mojacar, and the city of Almeria with its Alcazaba castle.
If you feel the need to explore further afield, Andalucia's famous cities offer an intoxicating combination of sunshine, relaxed lifestyle and stunning architecture that attests to the area's Moorish heritage. A must-visit for history and architecture buffs alike is the lovely city of Granada with its iconic Alhambra Palace.
Vera area
You will find plenty to keep you busy in Vera and the local area. Vera itself is home to a number of fantastic beaches, including several naturist beaches if you are so inclined!
Nearby is the historic hill town of Mojacar, which combines the traditional beach holiday with the chance to explore the narrow streets and whitewashed houses of this pretty hillside village - a real taste of traditional Spain!
The town of Garucha is another great place to visit, not least for its fabulous fish restaurants.
How to get there
1 hour from Almeria Airport - Easyjet flights from Gatwick and car hire very reasonbable from Almeria airport. Alternate airports - Alicante 2.5 hours and Murcia 2 hours drive.
