The Costa de Almeria region
Discover the natural environment of the Valle del Este: the Cabo de Gata Nature Park, Nijar, the beaches of Vera and the Almería Coast. Vera was founded in the 6th century BC by the Carthaginians, this town has passed through the hands of almost all the settlers that came to the peninsular: the Romans took over from the Carthaginians in exploiting the mines, and called the place Barea. In the 17C, under Muslim rule and given the lack of safety along the coast, the town was moved inland. It was finally reconquered by the Catholic Kings in 1488, although its site was changed in 1518.
With all this historic tradition, it is not surprising that Vera possesses a rich historic heritage, fruit of its past activities. This characteristic is also reflected in its varied gastronomy, which has in part been recovered from the former settlers: ajo colourao (red garlic), caldo colourao (red broth), olla de trigo (pot of wheat) gurullos con conejo (lumps with rabbit) fritada de emperador (fried swordfish) tortas de panizo (maize cakes) Are just some of the typical dishes that can be tasted here. Another of the characteristics of Vera is its craftsmanship, where it is noted for its la "Jarra trampa" or trick pitcher with four fake spouts and five peaks at the top.
This all makes Vera a tourist spot of great interest, where visitors can enjoy all its natural resources, which are unique in the European continent, as well as its historic heritage and rich gastronomy.
Vera / Valle Del Este Golf Resort area
Valle del Este Resort is a tourist residential complex with a golf course in the municipality of Vera, an Andalusian town situated on the South East coast of Almería. The Valle del Este Resort occupies a 108 hectare site, next to the Mediterranean dual carriageway, 70 kms from the airport at Almería, and 7 kms from the beaches of Vera and Garrucha. Wide fairways, elevated tees, receptive greens with a wide range of flag positions, as well as strategically-positioned water hazards and bunkers make each hole an authentic challenge regardless of your standard of play.
Is it a tough course? With wide fairways, large, receptive greens and 5,720 metres from the competition tees, it would not really seem to be. The strategic positions of the tees and the obstacles in the landing areas, however, make each hole a real challenge, whatever your level of play. The landscape, the desert of Almeria with occasional glimpses of the Mediterranean and the folds of the terrain make it a visual marvel. The small, circular, elevated tees and the desert which needs to be cleared at each hole make every pin a challenge. The fairways on some holes may remind you of some Arizona’s finest courses, but with the singularity of the local vegetation. There are also strategically-located water hazards to stretch players to the limits of their resources. The greens, fast and clear thanks to their size, boast a wide range of flag positions, with differences of up to 4 clubs.
Good players can reach the 3 par-5s on this 71-par course in two good shots, but remember that mistakes cost dear on this course. Beginners and average players should have no trouble reaching the green in 3 or 4 shots. The 4 par-3s are totally different. Hole 2 is a long hole with a small rise and very generous green which calls for the best long iron or fairway wood. Holes 6 and 14 should not present any great trouble with a medium-short iron.
The one to command at Valle del Este is hole 12. With just 152 metres from the rear tees or 138 from men’s, the distance is not really a big problem, but the river crossing it sure is! The views, the two small rear bunkers, clearing it all, simply one of the best par-3s in Spain. There are no 440-metre par-4s at this course, but you will not miss them. Tee positions are everything. Less aggressive play from the tee normally brings its reward. Hole 3, for example, a fantastic 345-metre par-4 which forces you to think right from the tee. A fairway surrounded by water with several landing areas and a spectacular green protected by a waterfall running down its right-hand side, which needs to be cleared.
The unbeatable weather, which means you can play in light clothing all year round, and the state of the course, thanks to fantastic maintenance, make Valle del Este an unforgettable experience. Although only opened in July 2002, its reputation has made it the venue for a long list of important, national events.
How to get there
Serviced by Monarch and EasyJet airlines, which fly direct to Almeria. Hire car companies are to be found in the airport, but I find Europcar are very competative. To view the location type 'Polígono Campo de Golf Valle Este' into google/maps.
