Home description
This is a beautifully fitted modern apartment on a raised level within a quiet private area, shared swinmmng pool with sunbathing area. It is a short drive away from the four star Valle del Este Hotel offering a modern Spa and gymnasium with a supermarket and a chapel nearby. The golf is outstanding - a championship course - and Mojacar playa is only a short distance away. Mojacar is family fun by day and clubbing by night. There are many Nature walks on the course, mountain trails on the Cabo de Gato, and riding schools.
There are local towns like Garrucha-famous for its fish restaurants- and Vera nearby. Further afield is the magnificent city of Granada with the Alhambra and the inspired Arabic Palacios Nazaries and Lorca with its walled citadel and lovely shops. The Costa de Almeria region
Andalucia is the southernmost territory of Spain and the part of the Iberian peninsula that is most quintessentially Spanish. It is also one of the hottest and the months of July and August can reach well over 30 degrees with humidity to boot! Other months are cooler and March through to the end of June has sunshine and pleasant evenings. The landscape then is greener and awash with wild flowers. Rain does fall and quite spectacular thunderstorms occur in the Winter months.
Granada is a very special city and worth a trip to view the Alhambra originally the fort and palaces of the Arab rulers. Stay at the Guadalupe Hotel next to the Alhambra and your trip and tickets are organised. There is so much to see. "The Rough Guide to Andalucia" by Geoff Garvey and Mark Ellingham is a must (get the up to date edition) which will fill in all the details of the towns and places of interest of the area.
It is hard to know where to start with the history , but the Arab culture has had a profound effect in Andalucia (Al-Andalus in Arabic) on customs and laguage. All names beginning with AL are Arabic and a common Spanish phrase direct from Arabic is "Ojala" meaning " let us hope so" . In the end the Christian forces forced the Arabic culture out, but the Christians held the Arab states in thrall for centuries and taxed them. There was more commercial than spiritual motive for the final conquest.
Another town with a citadel is Lorca and you reach the 13th.century by time machine and see the area of the time with the inhabitants. All quite safe as no one -to my knowledge- has failed to return!
Vera / Valle Del Este Golf Resort area
Mojacar - the Fiesta of the Moors and Christians takes place here in June- a short drive away has the original pueblo on the hillside with ancient winding streets and the fortified church, whereas further down in the beach area is Mojacar Playa with its hotels, bars, jazz clubs (eg Tito's) restaurants and of course the beach. A main meeting place is "Parque Commercial" with its supermarkets, coffee plazas and surprisingly very stylish shops selling cool clothes for teenagers, jewellery and many things with a Spanish and Andalucian flavour. Horse riding can be aranged from Mojacar; further on is the fishing village of Garrucha with its restaurants. Be careful some fish portions are sold by weight! The Garrucha market is on Friday morning and there are bargains in lace, leather and clothes!
Vera is an ancient town on the hill with a fortified Church. It has a tourist centre and a reconstructed convent building for cultural events including song and art. Its market is on Satuday morning. Turre has a strong gypsy connection and the sights and sounds of Flamenco can be heard above the hubbub of the ex.pats!
How to get there
Fly to Almeria Airport and by car, you are fifty minutes from the apartment.
