The Costa de Almeria region
The Costa de Almeria is a region of unique beauty and has until recently been southern Spain´s undiscovered gem. The long golden sands of Mojacar Playa is just one of the reasons this area has become a top destination for Spanish and British holidaymakers. The landmark hilltop village of Mojacar Pueblo, with its distinctive houses, labyrinth of narrow streets and Bohemian character is another major attraction. A vibrant mix of residential and holiday complexes, golf courses and unchanged towns and villages stretch out along the coastline; the port of Garrucha, with its renowned seafood restaurants, and the impressive harbour of Almerimar, are all must-sees.
Vera Playa / Altos de Nuevo Vera area
Los Altos de Nuevo Vera is situated right in the middle of the Almería coastline. Located only 200 metres from the beautiful sandy beaches of Vera Playa, with a water park right next door and a shopping centre within easy reach, it is in an ideal location for families.Altos de Nuevo Vera is a particularly desirable low rise, low-density development boasting plenty of green zones and pool areas. The complex is specifically built to blend in with both the culture and aesthetics of the surrounding area. It is constructed using the highest quality materials to create an ideal living space for holiday living. It is only 10 minutes from three golf courses and 200 metres from a water park and beaches, plus all amenities are within walking distance.Finished in traditional Spanish whitewash, these properties blend beautifully into the landscape. The apartment faces the swimming pool and garden areas.
With its miles of sunny, sandy beaches and frequent low-cost flights, Vera makes an ideal destination for a relaxing holiday. The Moorish influence on the area from eight centuries of occupation is evident, but as well as rich history, there are many natural wonders to enjoy such as the natural park of Cabo de Gata with its lunar landscapes and rugged coastline peppered with small coves. Only accessible by foot, this area is particularly appealing for hikers, nature lovers and birdwatchers.
The seaside resort of Vera Playa covers the beach area between Puerto Rey and Villaricos. Interestingly, it is said to be the place where Hannibal's elephants landed in Roman times. In the 1980s the area was practically undeveloped, however, recently this whole area has been undergoing intensive urban development and now boasts several hotels and many beach side complexes. The resort has earned the prestigious blue flag for its 8km of white sandy beaches: Las Marinas, Puerto Laguna, Pueblo Laguna, Puerto Rey and El Playazo.
Along with restaurants, bars and shops Vera Playa also offers the only Water Park in the area, Parque Acuatico. Here you can take a thrilling ride on one of the many flumes or sit and relax by one of three swimming pools. There is an excellent selection of water shoots and slides and a children’s section with a play area and their own water slides. The park is open from May until the end of September. For your shopping needs there is the Puerto Ray development close to Vera Playa which has a smart shopping centre and supermarket. Vera Playa is now becoming an increasingly popular year round resort both to live and take a holiday.
The walled, renaissance town of Vera is one of the most important commercial centres in the region. Originally called Baria, it was located by sea near Villaricos. The Arabs moved it to the hill of Espiritu Santo, but a huge earthquake destroyed it in 1518. The tale goes that Queen Isabel climbed to top of this hill, fired an arrow and ordered that Vera be built where it landed. Vera as we know it was built in the 16th Century in the urban Renaissance style and later enlarged in 18th Century.
The main square, Plaza Mayor, has several noteworthy buildings. The Church de la Encarnación (1520), flanked by 4 great towers, was built as a fort to protect against the frequent Moorish attacks. Inside there are marvellous altarpieces, remarkable in their architecture. To the left of this is the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall), built in the 16th Century and renovated in the 18th Century. Here, on the ground floor, is the Ethnographic and Archaeological Museum, originally the barracks of civil guard. There are exhibits on history, folklore and local traditions. The town hall also houses the municipal archives.
At Desert Springs golf course 'The Indiana' is an 18 hole, par 72 course of 6,173 meters designed by Peter McEvoy, the successful Walker Cup captain. Situated about 15/20 minutes from Mojacar it is the first desert course to be built in Europe rivalling any of the now famous desert courses in Arizona or in California. With lush fairways, water features and rugged desert terrain Desert Springs is destined to become one of the finest golf resorts in the world. Here golfers are compelled to keep the ball on the fairways but can take relief from staked cacti. It is highly recommended.
As well as year round activities such as golf, diving and horse riding, during the summer months there are a wide range of organized activities, live music, flamenco, quiz nights, volley ball competitions and village fiestas. As in most Mediterranean countries, children are welcome just about every where. For younger children, there are many playgrounds dotted along the beach as well as organized activity groups supervised by professional nannies. For older children the Pueblo Indalo Complex is popular for its table games, discos and evening shows, all ages will enjoy Mojacar mini golf, Garrucha go - cart track, The Sorbas caves, Vera aqua park and Tabernas theme parks.
For those looking for an active holiday there is much to do. There is a full range of watersports including jet ski-ing, canoeing, water ski-ing, sailing, big game fishing, windsurfing, kite surfing and scuba diving. If you have a head for heights why not take a flight in a microlight over the beach at the Indalo Wings Microlight Centre or try your hand at paragliding.
Also in the winter months there is skiing and snowboarding available in the Sierra Nevada mountains, situated just 2 hours drive from the beach.
For those interested in wildlife and in that we mean flora and fauna, not a heavy night hitting the bars – you’ll find a lot to enjoy without going very far, in fact, the region includes some of the most unique and varied wild life habitats in the whole of western Europe. The Cabo de Gata Natural Park and The Sierra Alhamilla Mountains are interesting and rewarding areas for the wild life enthusiast; over half of the 8000 species of plants native to Spain are common in Andalucia, including 150 species which are unique to the region. Many of the plants that are indigenous to Andalucia grow only in the arid areas of Andalucia.
