The Costa de Almeria region
The Costa Almeria is as varied as any of the Spanish Coasts. The coast is completely unspoilt.
The Gulf of Almeria, often referred to as the "Costa de Almeria", is a 217 km long coastline in the province of Almeria in the southeast of Andalucia, between the provinces of Granada and Murcia.
This scenic coast is very varied, we find wide and long sandy beaches as well as small bays, dry desert landscapes as well as green oases, fruit and vegetable plantations, forests and mighty mountain ranges.
The sun shines over 3,000 hours a year here, and the sky is usually cloudless and bright. The climate is subtropical, Mediterranean, hot and dry. The year-round average temperature is 18/19 º C and in winter the water temperature is warmer than the air temperature, which makes Almeria an attractive tourist destination all year round.
The dramatic desert landscapes of Almeria have been discovered by the film industry too, and several far-west movies have been filmed here as well as "Indiana Jones", "Conan the Barbarian" and "The Last Crusade" by Steven Spielberg , just to name a few.
At the north of the Costa de Almeria are the fabulous beaches of Vera. A little further south is Mojacar which successfully combines the popular beach holiday with the hillside white village that tourist love to explore.
To the east of Almeria we find the rugged and desolate coast of the Cabo de Gata - Nijar natural park. This is an arid desert landscape and the annual rainfall here is less than 200mm. It is sparsely populated, few villages and a very low population density. Visitors feel a sense of exploration here as many of the coves can only be reached on foot. This area is particularly popular with nature lovers and back-packers. The most popular coastal village is San José.
West of Almeria is the highly developed tourist resorts of Roquetas de Mar and Aguadulce. These have all the facilities of any modern resort to support the package holiday market.
Almeria city is worth a visit with the Alcazaba castle overlooking the metropolis.
To the west we find the developing complex of Almerimar with Marinas, golf, hotels and many other facilities.
The fishing port of Garrucha still holds its Spanish charm and there are lots of restaurants and bars serving locally caught fresh fish and seafood. These blue flag beaches are cleaned daily and never crowded and the blue Mediterranean sea is clean, warm and ideal for swimming. There are lifeguards on duty in peak season. The local fishing boats leave the harbour in the morning and return that evening between 17:00 and 17:30, unload their catch and auction it off in the fish market to the local fish restaurants. It is fantastic to watch and you are welcome to wander around the auction as it happens and buy if you wish, the perfect supper!
The town itself has a large supermarket and an assortment of shops selling everything from sandals to souvenirs. Don´t miss the local market on Fridays where there are fresh fruit and vegetables and lots of clothes and shoes at very good prices. The marina is only a 20 minute stroll along the promenade. Garrucha also has a wide selection of shops, banks, dental and medical facilities.
A little further down the coast is the town of Mojacar Playa which has a shopping centre and the coastal strip is full of shops, restaurants and bars to suit every taste and pocket. Mojacar Pueblo is a 'must see'!!
