The Andalucia region
Said to be the warmest and sunniest region of Spain, Andalucia has it all. History, museums, architecture, the National Park, Gato de Caba, is all here and you will see the Indalo Man symbol wherever you go in this area.
The Indalo Man is an ancient symbol found in the province of Almeria over 100 years ago.
Also know to some as the “Indalo Puppet”, it was first found somewhere in the Las Velez mountain range of northern Almeria province in a caved known as La Cueva de los Letreros (Cave of the Signboards), near Velez Blanco by Antonio Gongónia y Martinez in 1868. The cave itself was made a National Historic Monument in 1924.
The symbol is said to date back to Neolithic times and seems to depict a man holding a rainbow in his arms, over his head.
The original symbol was also placed along another of symbols, including horned men and animals. It is believed to date back some 4500 years. Some believe that the Indalo represents a prehistoric god holding the rainbow in his open arms in an apparent pact of protection with man. Others believe that the true meaning has been lost. The Indalo became a local “good charm” symbol and over time, it was used to ward away bad luck and even the “evil eye”.
The fishing port of Garrucha still holds its Spanish charm and there are lots of restaurants and bars serving locally caught fresh fish and seafood. The blue flag beaches are cleaned daily and never crowded and the blue Mediterranean sea is clean, warm and ideal for swimming. There are lifeguards on duty in peak season. The local fishing boats leave the harbour in the morning and return that evening between 17:00 and 18:30, unload their catch and auction it off in the fish market to the local fish restaurants. It is fantastic to see this happening and you are welcome to wander around the auction as it happens and buy if you wish, the perfect supper!
The town itself has a large supermarket and an assortment of shops selling everything from sandals to souvenirs. Don´t miss the local market on Fridays where there are fresh fruit and vegetables and lots of clothes and shoes at very good prices. The marina is only a 20 minute stroll along the promenade. Garrucha also has a wide selection of shops, banks, dental and medical facilities.
A little further down the coast is the town of Mojacar which has a small shopping centre and the coastal strip is full of shops, restaurants and bars to suit every taste and pocket. Mojacar Village is a must see community built into the mountainside. Stunning views, church, shops, restaurants and bars, narrow winding streets make this village an absolute must see!
Vera Playa itself is the coastal area of Vera Town, just 7 kms away.
